Hi All...

Am curious about loading 30/30 ammo for use in the Contender and Encore HANDGUNS. Mostly wondering about bullets of 150gr. or less, especially the 130-grainers.

* Is there any jacketed bullet out there consistantly producing really good accuracy for you?

* How much "mushrooming" (or lack thereof) are you seeing on game, especially coyotes and deer?

* Anyone have a favorite cast bullet for target loads?

* If you're running your loads through a chrono, what kind of velocities are you getting (from what length barrels) ?

* Anyone have a load they like as a "double-duty" load between the handguns and a bolt-action rifle ?

MANY THANKS, ALL !!

I have a Contender super 14" in 30/30. I load 125 gr Nosler BT's over 28.0 gr of IMR 4198. It will shoot under 3/4" at 100 yds with a 4X scope with a good rest and in good light when I am on my game.

I killed a deer on 12/28 with it at 70 yards. I shot low through both shoulders and the lower chest cavity. Deer was 105# doe and she was dead right where she stood.

I have killed quite a few deer with that load from 5-175 yards. Most were 50-80 yards. All were dead right there or within a few steps except for the 5 yard one. That was a big, heavy old doe who was running and full of adrenaline already. She ran about 125 yards or so. She was shot high in the back just behind the ribcage and the bullet ranged down and forward to exit just in the off-side 'armpit' through the lower ribcage.

EVERY bullet exited and none have been recovered but wound path shows plenty of expansion and plenty of penetration.

That has been my personal experiences and I hope it gives you some insight into how to begin your quest for a suitable load for your applications.

For varmint hunting I would seriously look at Hornady 110 grain V-Max.
For hunting, 125 grain Nosler Ballistic-Tips.
They both shoot exceptionally well in everything I have tried them in.

Not for Tubular magazines though!

oH god your here too now. Trying to still bash the 30-30. First of all shawnee the 30-30 uses a .308 bullet. With that i have shot 200 grain bullets, fmj, hallow point, anything made in a .308. I have also shot 120 grain bullets. Now i even cast my own bullets. Like i tried to tell you before. the trajectory stuff you had is just theory and hogwash. EVery gun is going to be different. Even with factory ammo. Still though when you reload you open yourself up to a lot more options than with just buyin factory ammo. Only difference is you can load up a bunch of pointed bullets in a 30-30. a common practice would be to put on fmj in the mag, followed by a round nose or flat nose. then put one jacketed in the chamber.

Please go read a book and stop try to gather information to bash the 30-30.
