30 30 lever action

I sold a marlin 336 to a friend a few years back.. for 300.

I probably should checked lever action prices first, I guess.

Find a Sears Model 54; Winchester '94 in costume. Should be sub $500. Mine shoots great.

I doubt anymore, all of those "off brands" are a hot thing now. Sears, Western Auto, Wards....all of those re-branded items are in some cases going for more then the "originals".

My guess is in most cases they got sold for a bit less. Also got used hard, so nice ones are harder to find. I know I seek them out.

Not a good time to buy a lever gun at this time. Prices are crazy high. And I don't think those prices will stay high. Some of the guys paying those prices will see the value drop at some point. Wait it out.

Did you make that up yourself?

Your only hope is to buy a complete clapped out beater, or, hope you run into someone who knows nothing about firearms.

Both of ours are in great shape, ones a newer model the other is a 1976 vintage iirc, I purchased the older one from a gun shop in Troy Mt. the other came from a pawn shop here in Libby Mt.

You may want to rethink your post..

Buddy of mine who doesnt use the internet asked me a few weeks ago to confirm a trade was good. He was giving up a generic basic AR15, of which he got 2 of in trade for an old pickup. He would be receiving two Marlin 30-30 lever action rifles. I told him to jump on that as fast as he could. They are not JMs but worth every bit as much as probably 3 basic ARs lol.

Hard to find a lever gun for a decent price any more.I just bought a JM 1894 in 44 Mag this past Monday. It was 800 dollars and isn't in bad shape, but certainly not pristine. You might watch for estate sales, etc.Forget Gunbroker,as has already been mentioned.I also have a JM marked 1894CP that I bought new.It was a little over 400 back in 01 or 02 when I bought it new.A good one of those will fetch 1500 or more sometimes.I'd say it'll take quite a while for lever gun prices to settle down,if they ever do.I'd watch the classifieds and tell my shooting buddies what I'm after and hope for the best.

The price may be heavily dependent on area. Also time frame is a factor. Gun prices have been jumping at an amazing rate. Any where I have been a decent JM Marlin 30 30 is going to run 800 -900 dollars. Anything less then that and they are literally not worth bringing home. I am a shooter not a collector. Scratches , bluing wear and maybe a few pits don’t bother me. Gouges, large patches of rust and internal mechanical issues do. That is what you get here for 500 bucks

Just so folks know there were a few late North Haven Marlin rifles that did not get a clear JM stamp, but they are still fine Marlins. I had one made in 2008 or so. It may be partially struck or not readable. The JM stamp is not totally definitive.

Didn't/wouldn't you want to post a WTB in the buy-sell-trade section? Or did you?

I saw one a few months ago in a local gun shop for $575. Last time I was in that shop. So, deals can still be had.

Not trying to hijack the thread but for perspective, in 1993 I graduated from high school and in lieu of a graduation party my parents bought me a Marlin 336CS from the now defunct Sports Authority. It cost $249 before taxes then; according to the inflation calculator that price today would be $489. Gun prices sure are out of whack right now; for added perspective in 2019 I also purchased a Ted Williams Model 100 .30-30 for $279 at a local gun shop; that same gun today would be $400+. Like others have said you may want to hold off a little while purchasing one or, if seeking a hunting rifle, I suggest looking for a Savage Axis hunting combo.

And BTW, I still have both guns and am not parting with either one.

Even 10 years ago, the $300 Glenfield was getting harder to find. The Interweb has had a leveling effect on market prices

I would not hold-off, if that's what you really want, do a lot of shopping and searching and get it now. I don't see how prices can drop, or even hold steady in the present economy and political climate. And a "return to normal" is not going to happen.

I saw two Marlin 336 30-30s sell locally last weekend both in good condition or better in my estimation. The 1971 pre-safety sold for $700 and a 1983 w/safety sold for $675.
I was lucky enough to pick one up last year about this time for $499 but that's the last one I've seen in this area for under $500.

I think this is an unusual twist in the gun world .
I used to clean my guns at work because I was paid strictly on commission and my time was my own. A guy that hung around the shop came over to see what I was doing and commented that he knew my rifle was a marlin because the wood look like crap from 20 feet away (not the case at all). He had really negative things to say about marlin in general and made it out like I was shooting the cheapest pos on earth. Here we are about a decade later and Marlins are way up, I know I'm not selling and anyone who's got a keeper isn't selling either- that's going to drive the price up. I doubt it'll ever go down for a proper JM marlin. I've got high hope for the ruger guns but I fear they may lack the soul that endears the 336 to me and folks like me.

I wonder what my collection of marlin 22s is worth, a 1897, 97 & 39a - the newest of which was made in 1957. Hmmmm, nope not selling

So true, in general I think the guy looking at "off brands" now has the internet to draw information from, so they are more informed. This also means that there are more people out looking and buying. Years ago it was only a few, today so many more thanks to the internet and what can be learned from there.

STORY TIME:

Several years ago I came across a JC Higgins 31 at a gun show, if you don't know it really is a basic little 22 with one unique feature......it has a built in sling. Now I say sling, but a better description would likely be dog leash. I don't know I have always found them cool. I come across the table early in my lap of the gun show, With a fixed budget of what is in my pocket I tell the guy I am really looking for an X....whatever X was at the time, but always wanted one of those. Cheap, guessing couple hundred. I continue on my way, find nothing and go back and it is gone. Well heck. I have been on a halfway hunt for one now for years. Why....don't know, I need another 22 like I need a hole in the head, but that was just soo cool. You could say the same thing about the daisy 22's I found before they became "a thing" should have bought them years ago. Many don't know Daisy the BB gun maker made rimfire 22's. For a long time worthless, now wow, into stupid range. They are very cool however.

Point is that there is SO much information out on the interwebs, and a guy getting into this.....hobby or bottomless pit.....has access to info unlike anytime in history, both good and bad. People know really what that sears or western auto really is, and that actually there are fewer of those running around.
