Does anyone have a recipe or known data source for light, plinking 30-30 loads. I've heard that you can load 100 grain or 110 grain rounds to the level of .357 magnum and still be pretty accurate. I just got a winchester 30-30 and love it but it would be nice to have a 100 or 300 light loads to plink off as if it was a .22(and I have 1 of those too).

Thanks

165gr hardcast (.310) over 9gr of trailboss(work up from 7gr), cast bullets are cheap, or you can cast them yourself, keeping with the plinking purpose. and is great to about 50 yards, and fairly quiet. people have also had good luck with unique and bullseye. I prefer light loads with heavy bullets instead of 100gr or less loads, they tend to be inconsistent, the heavier bullet helps burn the powder more efficiently as they tend to let more pressure build in the case, and peak sooner, reducing noise, and preserving velocity, expect 1000-1100fps(subsonic) and little more than 22 noise or recoil.

10 grains of Red Dot powder and a 150 gr. cast lead bullet. My favorite light .30-30 load. We've been shooting it for years. Works with a jacketed bullet also.

Hodgdon.

I have used 7gr. Unique with a Meister 165gr lead bullet. I just bought some Trail Boss powder and last night loaded some up using Hodgdon's data. Start load of 6.5gr to a max of 9. Velocity is ~1000-1200 fps.

Hornady & Speer make a 100gr. "plinker" bullet but it is jacketed. I feel more comfortable using lead light loads. I see that Meister makes a 115gr. hardcast bullet for the 30 carbine that my be fun to load up in the 30-30 for small game.

I use 12 grain of Unique with 150 and 170 grain lead bullet from Widener. If I am not too lazy I would use soft gas check ( anything above 1500 FSP is recommend ) . I use this load for plinking at the can at 40 and 50 yards.
