Does anyone know of and had dealings with a competent gunsmith in North Georgia? I live in Hemptown near Blue Ridge, GA and need some work done on this old 30-40 Krag that was sporterized waaaaay back in the day and wants to live again. It started out as an 1898 rifle, was apparently cut down to 22 inches. The muzzle looks like it needs to be recrowned. It has a Lyman banded front ramp sight installed. The pinned insert needs replacing...it's bent to the left and is missing the ivory bead. The rear sight is an old Redfield Receiver sight and with it cranked all the way over, the rifle still shoots to the right and low. I want the sights fixed and regulated to a handload based on Hornady's 220 grain round nose bullet. The action is smoother than owl snot and I want to fix this one up as a deep timber hunter. The stock is the original that was cut down and tooled (pistol grip was grafted on and secured with walnut pins). It still wears the original steel buttplate. I would like to have the gun reblued as well. I have a source for a modern retro replacement stock with low comb for use with open sights. I do not want to mount a scope on this rifle. It is an easy shooter and is quite light.

I've got a soft spot for Krags and I also have an original 1899 Cavalry carbine that I keep in my safe. That one is in great condition and I only occasionally fire it. It will stay as God intended.
