I dusted off an old Krag from the closet I have had since the 70s and tried to find a side mount for a scope. Got tired of looking so I built one in my shop and it works great. I was just wondering, how many of you still have the old 30.40 Krag and how do you like them? Even though the action is quite stiff I really love this old gun, how about you?

I really like mine but fortunately it's not a bolt action but a Winchester 1895 built in 1926 with a Lyman Model 21 aperture rear sight on it. This was my father's deer rifle for as long as I can remember.

If the action is stiff, it isn't right. The Krag has the reputation of being the smoothest operating bolt action of the blue steel and walnut era. There are some pretty slick guns running on plastic and plating now, but the Krag still sets the standard.

My old Krag

Mine was a hand-me-down from my Dad, I'm not sure how he got it but I've had it for 30+ years. I've used it for many years for antelope here in Wyoming. It has a scope and is very smooth and accurate in five seasons five antelope in five shots. I haven't taken it to the range in many years since I am running low on ammo and haven't found a source for new shells.

I actually looked at one today at a pawn shop. I walked in and the shop owner was looking it over. Price tag said $499.00 I told him it looked like a nice rifle but more than i would fork over. He told me that it had been priced wrong and he would take $259 bottom dollar for it. Really got me thinking I have not owned one in the past but it seemed like a good deal. What is the going rate for a bolt action 30/40 sorry I have no real details on the rifle. Other than it is a Springfield 1899 seems like it is really pretty good shape though.

I looked for a cheap shooter Krag for 10 years before finding this one at a show for $85. Dropped another $100 on the replacement wood.
