I just bought a couple hundred nylon 30 cal sabots that will load into a 30cal but accept a .224 bullet. The add claimes no harm to my barrel or rifle and claims velocities in excess of 4000fps! wanted to get some education input before i put these through my baby. anything will help, thnx.

I have never loaded any of my own sabot ammo but I have used a few boxes of remingtons accelerator ammo over the years in 30-30 and 30-06. The accuracy was ok for groundhogs at moderate range.

I have some that I bought at a gunshow. Loaded some in .308, shot them in a M-100 auto. Of course they didn't function, they were lousy for accuracy. I now have a Savage in .308, I may try again to see if they can be made to shoot accurately at all.

The key to loading sabots is to completely clean the barrel prior to shooting them with something like J-B Bore cleaner, followed up with a good solvent. All the copper fouling and any other fouling must be removed for them to work properly. Even then, you won't get the level of accuracy you get with a full size bullet, but they can be novel to play with.

Hope this helps.

If you have any kind of muzzle brake with an inside diameter larger than the bore, don't use them. The sabot may start to open inside the brake, with disasterous effect. More of a concern with .50 caliber rifles, but it's probably still worth mentioning.

lot of fun to play with. i shot them out a rem700 vss in 308win with 55 and 69g bullets. they weren't accurate enough to use regularly. i can't remember if i ever got them to chrono... iirc, they always errored, possibly due to the nylon follower

I shot some accelerators when they first came out using the same hold in my -06 as I used for a hot loaded 150 gr. nosler bullet @ a lased 500 yrds.. They hit the dirt at about 250 yrds.
