Anybody have experience and/or recommendations for a swaging die for cast bullets to be used in a .30-30? Pouring my own is one of those things I have done very little of, and none at all for rifles. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I think what you're asking about is a bullet casting mold. There are a lot of molds that are suitable for use in the .30-30. You'll also need a way to size and lube them.

I'd suggest purchasing the Lyman Cast Bullet Manual and read up on the subject. That will answer a lot of your questions.

Hope this helps.

Hi Fred...a mold I already have pilfered from a garage sale box....a Lyman 2 cavity 173 grain flat nose gas check, .309 diameter. The few handgun bullets I have cast, needed to be run through a die to finish size and put the gas check in place. Is the process different for rifles? Will look the book up, sounds like a good addition to my shelf....and Thanks!

c.latrans,

Then what you're looking for is a sizer/lubricator, which will size the bullet, apply the lubrication and seat the gas check. The machines are made by Lyman, RCBS, Saeco and Magma. You may be able to pick up a used one for about half the price of a new one, except for the Star/Magma, which holds it's value right up at retail.

There's also a cheaper way to go with the Lee push through sizer dies. They don't apply lube, just size the bullet. You still have to lube the bullet before you run it through the sizing die, and there are several ways to do that.

Hope this helps.
