I am trying to use 30 Carbine and Trail Boss to make some light lead loads for use in CAS with a pair of Ruger Blackhawks that I already have for the GF to use. In the past I was was using 8.3 GR Blue Dot/110 LRN and they were OK loads but the propellant would not burn completely and the cylinder would have to be brushed out before the next six could be loaded each time. A real PITA for you if doing a stage in a CAS shoot. I will be using a 110 GR RN from Missouri Bullet and the mentioned TB. I was looking at the TB loads for 32 S&W long of 2.9 TB /90 GR LRN and the 32 H&R MAG with 2.8 TB /90 GR LRN data. The 30 Carbine case volume is slightly more than the 32 H&R MAG and with a heavier bullet the pressure should be less with the same amount of propellant. I will try some 110 GR LRN and some 2.8/3.0 GR TB loads. They both fall well short of the MAX fill for using TB according to IMR's instructions for developing a load safely. Do any of you have Quickload data for TB and if so what would be the VEL of these two loads. I at this time have no crony and will not be repairing my shot up one:banghead: for a while yet. I will keep you all posted of my progress with this load. Thanks in advance.

FROGO207,

Trail Boss is MUCH too fast of a powder for the .30 Carbine. I use 12.5gr of 2400 for my lead bullet loads, although with a handgun, you can use much less.

I understand what you are saying about fast and I thank you. I am trying to find something like the 32 H&R MAG loads that are published by IMR in their data. This is for a pair of Ruger Blackhawks with a 6.5 inch barrel. I would NEVER try to use that loading for a rifle. This almost an equal for my 32 H&R MAG heritage revolver and they DO publish a CAS load for it using a 90 GR bullet. As a side I own 3 M1 Carbines and a AMT Automag in 30 Carb also. I use full power loads with jacketed or gas checked lead bullets for those however.

I don't understand your problem, you fill the case with Trail Boss weigh this charge and reduce to 70% for a starting load.

The 70% rule applies to all cases and is what I use on my reduced load in my .303 British.

Not exactly. You do not fill the case. You fill the case to where the bullet will seat and then take 70% of that for a starting load.

my plinking/bunny load for my 30 carbine blackhawk is a lee soupcan and 2.5gr trailboss. Very acurate and no recoil. Brass lasts a long time. Not as loud as the more traditional loads but you still need muffs. The 30 carbine is somewhat odd in that it really doesn't fit neatly into a small game role and is too small for larger game when loaded to factory levels so I use mine as a cheap plinker/bunny roller with trail boss.

Yeah All I was planning was to use it to hit the steel targets in a Cowboy Shooting Match. I wanted a quiet and slow round that would not splatter back at the shooter that would work with my matched pair of revolvers. BTW this afternoon I called IMR and they said that I was safe in what I was doing as long as it was NOT going to be used in a rifle. Just to make sure I started at the 30% below max fill using base of seated bullet -.02 as full level. I will try some at the 2.5 GR level and see what that does for accuracy also. Thanks for that input. The reason that I am not using 2400 or H110 is that I do not want the fireball when I shoot the revolver and wish to have a really controllable reduced load. Going for accuracy and speed at 20-25 feet without chance of splatter back at audience. No one have a Quickload program handy? That was what I was asking for in the first post, the VEL before I loaded up some to try.

Tried them today. The 2.5 GR of TB was accurate and the 3.0 GR of TB was slightly more of a setback as expected. We both liked the 3.0 GR load the best for fast shooting/acquisition. Just for grins I shot the last 6 of them at an old washing machine that I paced off at about 120 YDS away in the pit. My spotter said that the first one was centered and about a foot high. I adjusted and the next five were minute of washer, you could hear the clank when it hit.:D I was happy with those results let me tell you. BTW the 2.5 GR load felt about like shooting a .22 revolver as far as recoil goes.

You should have been looking at Trail Boss loads for the .32-20. There is only 1 grain difference in case capacity between the .32-20 (22gr) and the .30 Carbine (21gr).
.32-20 with a 115gr LFN: 2.2gr 642 fps 11,300 CUP.... 2.5gr 707 fps 15,300 CUP (IMR data)
Having said that, you can use any .32-20 load data for the .30 Carbine to create a milder round.
