Just like the title says. I'm looking for a 16" blackout upper. I really don't want to spend a grand on one. Looked at the CMMG's. What are your suggestions. Thanks.

Are there any others under a grand besides CMMG? Unless you reload you'll be spending ~$1 a round on ammo.

I do reload. That's one of the reasons I am choosing this caliber. I just found one from PSA. It's probably the one I will go with.

DS Arms makes a really nice one that's inexpensive (I have one) - but it's backordered for ??? how long. If you're patient it would be a good option.

The PSA upper looks good for a no frill upper.
If you look around a bit, others are out there.
But I went with the DSA no frill in SS. I'm on day 71 and waiting. But I would rather have it right than in a rush.
I think the hold up is the barrels with the tighter twists.

I keep seeing these gorgeous builds and start looking at what the parts run.... I think I will be happy with no frill for now.

The cost for store bought doesn't faze me. I haven't shot anything I didn't make at home for 30 years.
The brass for the 300 is standard .223/5.56 that is cut off a the shoulder and formed. The primers are the same as for the .223/5.56. The bullets I plan on using are what I run in my .308s/30.06s. The powder matches up to what I can use in loading .44 mags. This is a no brainer for me.

Next up is a tossup between a 6.8 and one of those big mambos, 450 or 50...

Model 1 sales has an affordable upper and rifle kit in .300 BLK. I don't have any experience with it, just saw it on thier site the other day.

Bently4700, I have found recently that the easiest way to get a good affordable upper is to build one. The only parts of the upper you really need to worry about are the bolt carrier group and the barrel. My suggestion would be to purchase a good barrel and then purchase mil-spec parts for everything else. I have had very good luck with parts from PSA and Surplus Ammo and Supplies. PSA currently has barrels in stock for 300 aac.

Barrel: $280
M4 upper complete: $85
Charging Handle: $15
Mil-Spec BCG: $110
Flash Hider w/crush washer: $20
Gas Tube w/ roll pin: $15
Delta Ring Assembly: $15
Handgaurds: $15
A2 front sight: $26
Handguard Cap: $2
Barrel Nut: $9

Total: $592

This doesn't save you much money over just selecting the PSA complete upper which configured the same as above would be $560.

I just built a lower yesterday....I believe the PSA is going to be my choice. The FN barrel is the selling point for me.
