SO I'm looking for people's opinions. My uncle died and gave my father for me a savage 99 in 300 savage now for deer I think that would be a great caliber for dear and yotes. Especially since I like to hand load. But i'm thinking larger animals, bear, elk basically anything i could hunt on this continent minus maybe the big griz. Should i buy the 30-06 for the larger animals or should the 300 savage cover me fine? No one in my family is really a hunter except for my uncle (RIP) so I'm sort of feeling this one out on my own. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

300 savage is really just a shortened 30-06 with roughly the same performance i have read online at shootingtimes.com. If its good for deer, itll be good for coyotes. just have to do more research on it.

there is no justifiable reason to unload that 300 savage in exchange for the 30-06.

keep the savage - it will do everything you are thinking of just fine. if you still want a 30-06, get it in addition to the savage, but not instead of the savage.

the 30-06 does not offer much over the savage. if you really feel you need to step up in power, look to the various 300 magnums and just bypass the 30-06.

the savage 99 is a classic collector gun and the 300 savage is a solid chambering.

First off, the prices on those 99's ain't going down anytime soon. I've got dad's in the safe and it'll stay there.
And anyone who says the 300 sav isn't adaquate for elk has never hunted with my dad. It won't take those 400 yrd shots that the big dogs will pull off, but it'll work at normal ranges just fine.

It's a classic whitetail combo. No way I'd sell it, no way in hell! The .300 Savage is the first "short .30-06" and the military looked at it when designing the .308 in the early 50s. With a 150 grain bullet inside 300 yards, the deer ain't gonna know the difference. It is superior to the .30-30 both in muzzle velocity and the fact that the Savage's rotary magazine can handle spitzers. Were I to use it for elk, I'd just use a premium bullet and stay inside 300 yards, same thing I'd do with my .308 actually.

Trade it off ??? :what:

No Days, Dude !!!!

Your 99 in .300 Savage is not only a very fine hunting rifle for larger game but also a major Classic and the caliber will do anything you can do in the large game fields.
