Getting a 300 win mag and would like to load H-4831sc with it as I already use that powder for my .270 win. If it works out it would keep things simple. If it didn't work out I can still use the powder and there's always room on the shelf for another powder. ;)
At first I'd load for deer but hoping for an Elk hunt one day and would like to be ready. I really like Sierra Game kings in my rem 700 so that's my thought on bullets.
I see H4831is listed on Sierras load data.
  • ANY one use this powder successfully with a 300 win mag ? (with any bullet)?
  • Any tips or pointers on loading for 300 WM would be appreciated also.

Yep, I use it in my Rem. 700 300 winmag and freakin' love it! I'm shooting a 180 Nosler Accubond over 70 grains. It shoots sub MOA if I do my part. I'm using a Winchester LRMP seated to SAMMI col length. My Remmy has too much freebore to play with overall length too much...

A .300 Mag is too much for deer or elk, but there are lots of loads on Hodgdon's site. Pick a bullet weight and work up a load.

With the right bullet, a 300 is perfect for a deer or an elk. I don't think he was asking whether he had the right caliber. I believe it was a question related to knowledge on a particular powder and some general advice.

H4831SC or standard cut will do just fine in the 300 WM, I've run it in both the 300 WM, and 7mm RM. Accuracy was stellar, but I wasn't getting the velocity I was desiring, so I switched to IMR-7828, I'm just that way.

BTW, the 300 WM is very good for ELK or deer, and it can be loaded to fit both game with little effort and zero compromise.

GS just curious. Why did you go with the IMR7828 instead of the IMR4350, I know nothing other then what I've been reading and I thought the 4350 was the preferred powder. I'm just getting into reloading and I'm trying to learn.

I've run IMR-4350, but it seems to run high pressures to get the velocity I desire. Same thing with H4831, it's great, but it takes the pressures to the ragged edge when going for full / typical velocity loads with this cartridge. I can work up 7828 to the top of Speer tables, and not see red line pressure signs. So it's not that I don't like H4831 or IMR-4350, they have both produced excellent accuracy for me, but not the velocity.

gamestalker or anyone else loading for 300 win mag, can I ask what FPS you get with your IMR-7828 load. What bullets your using?
I ran my h-4831 with 165 GK's and got 3031 maybe 3016 ( book is out in the shed) but that was 77gns. Although I saw no signs of pressure the pucker factor was there while shooting this load at max and over by some books. I'de like to be 3000-3100fps and not have the powder effect my cheeks. ;)
  • Also 79.5C << This is IMR max load. What does the "C" mean?
3,127
60,600 PSI

If you can find it I'd look at h1000 300 in to much for deer or elk but it kills just fine. My buddy and his daughter both shoot them. If you want a good shooting round load some 150 gr pills. If you want a hammer at long range look at some 190s or 200

Shot a Remington 721 300 HH for years. I've always used IMR 4350 with excellent results.
However I'm just now trying H 4831 in my custom 1903A3 270 Win.
Good luck with 4831. I look forward to your results.

That is a new one for me, and everyone else for that matter. Can you show some proof to backup that claim, or is that just your opinion?:scrutiny:

I used H4831sc in my .300wm loads this past deer season. ** Warning this load is above Hodgdon's listed max. Always work up your loads. I'm not responsible for your gun/loads!**
I loaded 180gr Nosler Accubonds, 73.5gr of H4831, CCI #250 LMRP, R-P brass, .015" off the lands (Max box length Win M70), no crimp, shoulder bumped .001". This load gave me about 3,050fps, SD=8, and .53" 3 shot groups at 100yrds. My 200yrd 3 shot groups were 1.15". I got a lot better velocity out of Federal Mag primers, but accuracy was terrible for me. IMR7828 worked really well with Fed primers.

A .300 Mag is too much for deer or elk,
Ok! I have never destroyed deer, or wasted meat while using a .300wm for deer. Sure light Ballistic Tip bullets @ 3200+FPS will make a mess of a deer. The 180gr Nosler Accubond stays together, but stops the animal.

I'm not at home right now, still doing my archery hunt, but when I get home I'll look at my log book and get the chrony numbers for those powders.

But what I do know, is 7828 pushes them a good 150 fps faster, and runs 2,000+ psi lower pressures to do it than H4831.

I'm currently using a Speer 165 gr. Hot Core, and the powder charge is at 85% to 90% table. This is Speer data BTW.
