Hey guys, just got back from a trip to the range. Was a blast but couldn't help think one thing. When shooting at the 600 yard 10 inch gong, and the 1,000 yard 15 inch gong during a 15 mph wind, my .308 )Savage Model 11) was having a hard time getting on target and required quite a bit of wind adjustment (however once I got dialed in the 600 yard gong was toast), but it was a real challenge because the winds at this particular range swirl around everywhere and are constantly changing. You can seldom fire off 3 rounds before the wind has completely changed. The 1,000 yard gong was another story, my scope didn't have enough adjustment (my next problem) even with a 20 MOA base (thought my scope doesn't have much vertical adjustment) and I was still about 5 MOA off of the target. I was thinking there were a few remedies to this problem: Get a new scope, or a better caliber. I was thinking, if going the caliber route, getting a .300 WSM, or a 7mm WSM, these calibers are much flatter shooting and buck wind better as well. Would one of these magnums be suitable (I reload) or should I go with something like a .260 or 6.5? I do prefer the heavier calibers because I like the power should I choose to hunt with this weapon. Another plus of a re-barrel is it would give me an excuse to take out my K31 more as the magnums are barrel burners! ;) Or should I just get a new scope? Sorry for the long post, guys! Any help is appreciated!

Any of the below...

Better bullets (155's?), new scope, bigger gun (30-06, 300, 7mm, etc), smaller gun (260, 6.5, 7mm-08, etc.)

I'd try better bullets first, then look at the scope...

Been running the 175 SMKs right now with 43.5 of varget, works like a charm accuracy wise, I just wish it was a little flatter shooting and bucked the wind better, but I guess my problem is my scope only has 30 MOA TOTAL ADJUSTMENT so I only get 15 MOA each way, it's a shame because I really like the scope, it's a Nitrex 6-20 with 1/8 moa turrets, glass is nice on it and tracks well, just needs more adjustment, thanks for the help though! And do you think the 155's would help any over the 175's?

I don't know what is best for you. A 308 should be good enough to shoot paper at 600 yards. 1,000 yards is about the limit though.

I'm a hunter that shoots paper to practice, and I do think very highly of the 300 WSM as a hunting round. It was used recently to set a new 1,000 yard record so it does have potential.

Ten shots into 2.8" at 1,000 yards.
