.303 British w/ .32 Auto (pistol) conversion?

I was visiting one of my shut-ins today from church. As usual, our conversation ran through a good hour of gun talk. Grinning, he disappeared for a while and came back with a .303 British that looked like an SKS, but bolt-action. It wasn't the gun he wanted me to see, though. He pulled the mag out of the rifle and stripped a couple rounds out - the third was an empty and it was black. Wondering why he had such a tarnished empty in his rifle, I was curious. He set it and a factory-fresh .32 Auto (pistol) cartridge on the table. I picked them both up and gave him a "so what?" look. Then I noticed the .303 "case" was actually a chamber conversion, allowing the .32 Auto to be inserted into the conversion and fired - sort-of like a Ciener conversion for an AR.

I'm not familiar eith either round. What are the diameters of these two bullets? Is the .32 actually a nominal .300 or is it really .32"? I don't think there's enough powder in a .32 pistol cartridge to do damage to a Mark IV .303 action, but I don't want this guy screwing something up something -- like himself!!! Is this safe? I don't know where he got the conversion. I don't think it's home-made job (I know he didn't make it) but he got it at a recent gun show, so who knows?

Those adapters have been available for many years. Perfectly safe with factory ammo and a neat plinking combo. The 32 ACP uses .312 bullets.
