I know it was semi-auto when he bought it, but I read conflicting reports on whether or not he'd converted it. Of course, the guy was a self-professed retard so I don't know how he'd have had the smarts or skill to do it. Heck, I know how to drill holes in the gun, take the old parts out, install the new parts, etc and do it right. Problem is, I don't think these parts were generally available at the time. The 'conversion' manuals were a joke and seemed harder than just doing it right.

So, does anybody know where I can find a source that says whether it was converted or not? Did the gun disappear like the Waco guns?

I haven't heard that name in a long time...

I don't recall ever hearing anything about his AK being automatic...

But I wasn't there.

What made you think of that Badger? This is actually the first I ever heard of this one...I was 7 when it happened. Is this the event that directly led to all the banning and wringing of hands and cries of "for the children" in the nineties?

Well, two things. One is Dianne Feinstein holding up an AKS around the same time as the killings. She seemed even more retarded than Purdy. Couldn't figure out what end the bullets came out of. Anyway, the news station that broadcasted the interview interspersed the interview with people shooting genuine AK's on full-auto and made the inference that Purdy's gun was an AK-47. I did a search and found this: http://archive.deseretnews.com/archive/31155/SCHOOLYARD-GUNMAN-CALLED-A-TROUBLED-DRIFTER-5-CHILDREN-KILLED-IN-SHOOTING-SPREE.html.

Here's a quote from the congressional record. Another idiot from Florida speaking:
"Mr. Speaker, I believe in self-defense. However,
I do not believe one needs an AK–47 to
defend himself. AK–47s can shoot 106 rounds
in 2 minutes. They are high speed machine
guns that have been used for shooting sprees.
Patrick Purdy, using an AK–47, killed 5 small
children and their teacher, while wounding 29
others on a playground in stockton, CA."

At any rate, I don't want to turn this into a political forum, I'm just asking if anybody knows if it was converted or not. I can convert an AR-15 to a "runaway" full-auto in less than a minute with a drill and a drill bit. That isn't to say that Purdy had done anything like this to his AKS.

Okay, I removed the particulars, but it's stupid simple to do. I just get annoyed when people say, "It's simple" and the other side says, "It's not simple" and neither of the people saying so really understand what they are talking about. I know it's stupid simple with an emphasis on the stupid part. Heck, the quickest way to club fed is to cut your shotgun off to 18.5 centimeters.

Converting an arm to fire full-auto can be accomplished. However, that same modification turns it into a gun that MIGHT fire full-auto, might fire once, or might just empty the magazine, whether you want it to, or not. It also MIGHT fire out of battery, and cause you physical harm, as well.

The type of modification I am speaking of turns it in to a "runaway" gun. That is, you close the bolt and the gun fires uncontrollably until empty, you hit the magazine release, you engage the bolt stop, or there is a malfunction. Don't even need a trigger in the gun. Of course, there would likely be screaming, bloodshed, and perhaps some jail time to follow.

So, anybody know the answer?

Purdy bought his AK from the same tiny shop in Sandy, Oregon that I used to go into after school to drool over their small selection of guns.

This was also the same store that earlier in the year we purchased a Ruger Super Redhawk as a present for my Dad.

I was blown away when I heard the rifle used came from my hometown, and the store I spent a good amount of time in.
