x54r here, but just because I like the platforms. Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic for that rifle/flamethrower I got for $100 out the door, including an unopened can of food for it.
If I hunted, or could afford a nice American rifle, maybe I'd enjoy .308 or .30-06 more.

How fast the bullet is flying outside of the barrel isn’t the entirety of the comparison between these 3. I see this silliness all of the time on boards, guys justify the x54R by touting ballistics similar to the .30-06... A vulture isn’t an Eagle just because they both fly high...

Never the Russian.

Sounds like a bias without any clear understanding of the bullet.

So you dislike anything that fires a 311 bullet?

IMHO I really see the 3006 as a mini magnum...and most that have shot it prone out of a bolt gun will go...yea...I could see that.

3006 is a fantastic cartridge, I own several things in that flavor, however my interests tend to drift off to the road less traveled....so I do tend to like the odd ducks.

I will stick with my statement that no matter the cartridge, and if it is tossing a 308, 311, bullet as long as the gun is in like shape....and I guess I should say class as well the results are going to be about the same.

I really don't think you are going to see the guns shooting one over the other being any different (enough different to worry about), now if you toss in 243, or some other flavors then yea there are going to be pluses and minus to each flavor...but in my book 308 vs. 311...and really I see that as what we are talking about here....not enough difference to worry about.

Just curious which one you guys like the most and why. I picked these three because they have similar ballistics. I dont want a ballistics debate. I prefer the 308 because of its wide variety of ammo selections and ammo prices. I also would use this cartridge for hunting if I didn't live in Iowa. There's also a large selection of rifles to choose from in this caliber. One thing ive learned from owning a Finnish Mosin M39 and buying ammo for it, there is a smaller selection of ammo vs 308 and nowadays the ammo is more expensive. I've never shot a 30-06 but I'm sure a lot of you guys have hunted with it and I would like to hear your stories about it. Let me know what you guys prefer and why. Lets keep it friendly. Thanks.

They are so similar in their practical applications that the choice comes down to what sorts of rifles you like. A buddy of mine just loves US WWII milsurps, so he's .30-06 all the way. I like light and handy short-action bolt rifles, so .308 suits me.

For all of these calibers, price of ammo fluctuates with availability, and a loading press is not a bad thing to have.

This is one of the most fun discussions I've read in a while. I have a 7.62x54R Finn and a .308. I've shot a lot of .30-06 just for fun. I like all three. I like the .308 'cause it will do almost everything the .30-06 will but is easier to handle. I like the .30-06 because it can do everything else. The 7.62x54R just speaks to the ammosexual in me.

30.06, because it's the caliber of my hunting rifles, Garand, AR10, & Springfield. 7.62X54R, because it's the caliber for my VEPR and M44.

What's 308?

.308 win. Three reasons...

1. I've been reloading and acquring brass and components for it for so long that I've built up a very nice supply of reloads.

2. I love a nice, short action bolt.

3. I just don't shoot at a long enough distance to notice any kind of difference between a .308 win and anything else that holds more powder.

.308 has been my go to favorite for awhile now. But if I could pick only one though, it'd be 30-06. I love my inherited M1 Garand too much.
