What civilian .308 ammo comes closest in ballistics to 7.62x51mm loadings? How does Federal's American Eagle 150 grain FMJ stack up?
I am looking for something a little better for military surplus stuff that I can have around "just in case". I need something that will hit to about the same point of impact and run on the same gas setting as the surplus I am shooting now.
Any other suggestions?

If there's one thing consistent about mil-surp ammo, it's inconsistancy. Can you chrony a few of your current batch of milsurp? I'd do that and buy a few boxes of different brands of ammo with the same bullet weight and chrony those. Select the best value that matches closest. One thing to note is that the brass of commercial will be thinner than military brass. I'd suggest trying UMC's yellowbox load in .308. It's one of the cheapest of the commercial that I would have confidence in.

Not a bad idea but I don't have a chrony. I barely have any time to get to the range anymore too. UMC is one that I hadn't thought of but I'll try it too if the Federal stuff doesn't shoot POI.
I have been shooting Portugese and South African 7.62x51 ammo. Both are great but I think that the Portugese may be corrosive. I get weird corrosion on my FAL's after I shoot that stuff that doesn't show up with handloads or the SA stuff. It has always gone off though. I have had a couple misfires with the SA stuff but it still mostly shoots great.
I would like to find something that shoots good, goes off every time, shoots point of aim, and doesn't need me to clean with windex after I shoot it.
Since I can't find that in military surplus, I figure I will look at what I can get in a commercial loading.
Thanks.

the winny 150's ae pretty close to milsurp. if you want to use milsurp, go with the oldcountries of the lion. america canada, england S. africa, aussie, or singapore. also the s.A. countries where most of the germans fled to , and took all their schematics and machinery with, they have good 308 ammo as well, namely chile, argentina, venezuela. run from mid eaast 308 , particularly india.

.308 ammo that you load using milsurp brass. With good reloading techniques, you will receive the twin benefits of superior accuracy and reduced cost.

I load and use Lake City M118 Match brass.

I am well acquainted with ammuntionstore.com and AIM already. My plan is to have three kinds of ammo:
1. Handloads - plinking
2. Surplus - just to have some ammo around and also for some plinking
3. High quality stuff that is reliable in my gun. I only need a couple hundred rounds. This stuff won't be shot on a regular basis. I just want it to have some around.

go buy a box of federal umc and winchester see which round shoots the best in your rifle and go from there .

42.5 gr. of IMR 4895 and a 146 gr. (or even up to 150) gets pretty close. I researched this years ago and came to this conclusion.

Just my opinon.

The whole purpose of the FAL's adjustable gas system is to keep the rifle working when it gets dirty in combat. Not to set it for a particular load or brand of ammo.
Milsurp ammo is usually loaded for reliablity, not accuracy.
"...commercial loading..." Commercial ammo is far more expensive than any milsurp ammo. It's also generally hotter. It won't hurt an FAL, despite the internet BS. FN's were made for varying qualities of ammo.
Reloading makes the whole issue go away.

In my experience, Federal's American Eagle is about the best quality "cheap" ammo out there. I have printed half-MOA groups with it in my scoped G-3, and it shoots consistently sub-MOA. UMC and WWB are OK too, but the Federal stuff seems to burn cleaner (a major concern in CETME pattern blowback rifles). Happy hunting.

What was the distance?

Guyon,

100 yards at my club's range at Odessa, NY. This load is a beauty, as in addition to the outstanding accuracy, it runs at 2785fps with a bullet with a BC of .504. Have only shot it as far as 800 yards at steel, but am tempted to take it to the 1,000 yard F Class range in PA this summer.
