Heys guys, new to THR not to shootin' - Looking to buy a 308 AR with a CAR stock M4 setup. Figure I better get it now before 2009. Any thoughts on who makes the best one currently? Any good/bad experiences. Thanks in advance!

DPMS makes a nice one for the money...I don't have much experience with various brands, but I was just faced with a similar question less than a month ago and after doing my research, I went with DPMS...

I picked this one and really like it so far, but like I said before, I don't have much experience at all...DPMS is just the one I picked.

Do you have an AR 15, or will this be your first AR style rifle?

I just got a DPMS LR308 AP4. It's a 16" barrelled rifle with collapsible 6 position stock,free floated forearm,and a flat top rail for optics.Sweet rifle,and a heck of a shooter.Check them out,you won't be sorry.

I have a DPMS Panther 308 with 24'' barrel, chrome bolt,A3 style upper (for the dust cover),JP trigger, logo'd butt stock with a sheperd scope> Anyways I really like my rifle, i will admit they are bit expensive but you get what you pay for. In my opinion i think it was worth my cost,as for groups i've have not really spent a lot of time trying but i know mine does 3'' at 500yds. i've ran 1000+ rounds through mine and i have not had any problems. Of course i also clean mine very thouroughly when i'm done.

In a word YES!

I was just curious as to why you would want a 16" barrel and not something a bit longer, for some extra velocity.

Well, I guess you aren't going to get too much help as to brands, so I'd check out DPMS, since most of the people I talked to when deciding said they have one and like it...

You may also want to check out Armalite, considering they are the first and only manufacturers of the AR10. I went with the DPMS to save a couple hundred so I could spend more on optics.;)

Hi, Gunther,

Just an additional comment...when I was looking for my first rifle, a .308 AR, I was also considering the Rock River Arms offering. But, I heard and read that RRA is not actually shipping them for some months yet...depending on what rumours one hears.

So, I went with DPMS, and I'm happy.

I've got an ban era armalite AR10A4C, chromed lined med weight 16" barrel, but the current carbines come with collaspable M4 style stocks.

I have some Armalite AR-10s that I really like. Those that I own have been reliable and accurate. My sons and I use them to shoot deer, then pose for photos with gun (20 round mag inserted, it is legal here), dead deer, and a big smile-send copies to Jim Zumbo. :D
