308 Battle Rifles

AR's are generally the most consitently accurate as far as I have seen. The gas system they use really helps in this aspect. They also seem to be the easiest to accurize.

M1As can be spectacularly accurate but require a bit of work to keep them as such.

HK 9x, 5x guns etc. have been made into very very accurate guns but out of the box standard models fall a below the above.

FALs are probably bottom of the pack here and seem to be best thought of as combat accurate. This is not to say they cannot hit the broad side of a barn or that there are not pretty accurate examples but I think these tend to fall about last in this group.

Having owned most and shot all but the most exotic, I have to agree with cslinger's assessment.

Probably why things like the FN SCAR-H or the possibility of similar .308 rifles find so much interest.

It is best if you go in willing to spend a lot of money and work your way through several rifles before finding that one that works for you, though that can be a great deal of money.

Trust me, I had a second job at a gun store to help me finance that whole ordeal, and still have no real good answers.

I have to admit, it was a lot of fun, and I did get to shoot case lots of .308, so there is that.:D

+2 on the AR .308 as far as accuracy goes. Even DPMS's new M4gery in .308 was doind 3/4inch 5 shot groups in the latest American Rifleman. With that said my $300 Century Cetme will do 1 inch groups in the hands of a good shooter(not me). If your wanting reliable accuracy go with the AR setup, want just a great all around battlerifle get a FAL,( over 90 countries can't be wrong).

My Eagle Arms AR-10 is reliable and shoots sub MOA. It has a stock 20" stainless barrel without a muzzle brake. The only modification I made was to swap the trigger for a RRA two stage.

I'd pick up a DSA FAL if you want a top of the line battle rifle. Lots of cheap parts out there for you to pick from if you wanna customize, too.

ar-10

the dpms bushaster or armalite will all probably shoot 1moa or under, wich is not to say the other rifles are not good too. personally i would rather have an M-1a, just because they have a wood stock and are real rifles. the fal falls short because of its skinny barrel, and how most of them usually get 3" groups ant 100 yards, but a heavy fluted barrel could fix all of that. plus, the fal has readily avalable parts and cheap mags.

AR's tend to be the most accurate w/o any work. However, my CAI G-3 shoots sub-MOA with certain ammuntion. Go figure:confused:

My CAI CETME is pretty close to it as well. I have only gotten her out to 75 yards, (that will change soon), but I have gotten <1" groups at that distance, with surplus ammo and iron sight. :scrutiny: Usuall accuracy seems to be about 1 1/4"-1 1/2" at that range though. Fine by me. :)

How accurate does it need to be? If you're looking to shoot National Match accuracy, get the AR or M1A.

If it's a SHTF rifle, then they all shoot within "minute of bad guy". I prefer the HK, if only for it's simplicity.

Base on my first hand experience with the following .308 rifles (own, or have owned them)
- SA M1A, Loaded SS
- DSA SA58 (FAL)
- H&K HK91A2
- DPMS Panther LR

Ultimate Accuracy and good reliability with proper ammo: DPMS Panther LR .308
Ultimate Reliability and good accuracy with just about any ammo: HK91

Nando,

Are you saying the DPMS came in last for accuracy? Not disagreeing or arguing with you just curious as that seems odd. Seems like that one would have come in first or possibly second after the M1A.

Could it be the shooter? Once again I am not flaming just kind of shocked that a FAL or even HK variant edged out an AR variant, not saying it can't happen just rarely see it. By asking if it is the shooter is not a dig on your skills just that some folks shoot certain platforms better then others.

Please don't take anything I have said as a disparaging remark as I am just curious.

Chris,
No, the DPMS is the best for accuracy. As a matter of fact, with my handloads it shoots about as well as my Remington 700PSS. Best 4-round groups at 100 yards have been around 3/8", and the normal groups are around 5/8" shooting from a bipod. Now I am working on 200 through 600 yard loads.
Example:

That is why I classified the Panther as providing "ultimate accuracy".

Why did you think it was last? Just curious...

Edit:
Actually, I went back to look through some of the targets from over a year ago, and I have three-shot Ø0.25" and a Ø0.32" groups, but I prefer to use four- and five-shot groups.

Thanks

Alex

I glanced at the post and it seemed as if you were listing the firearms in order instead of just listing what you have experience with.

Thanks for the clarification.

Chris

I have experince with the G3 and FAL

IMHO:

G3 = better accuracy

FAL= easier follow up shoot, faster recovery
