I bought a new Savage Model 11 bolt action Rifle in 308Win with a Nikon 3x9 scope. I sighted it in with 168 gr. remanufactured ammo with a Hornady AMax I believe. Once I got it zero'd i want to try some Barnes 150 gr. ammo I bought. Barnes was $40 a box so didn't want to waste them. I figured the shot would be high or low but not left or right. Anyway the 150 gr. was 6" high and 6" right. Does anyone know Why it would be right?

Thanks
DT

The only thing I can figure is the difference in recoil causing you or the gun to pull the shots right. Never saw THAT much R/L difference between loads / bullets

Well, you are using a bullet that has quite a bit more velocity. It also has a longer body. It will react differently to the rifling and velocity. Two completely different bullets with two completely different loads. Different results should be expected.

6" high is a little more than I'd expect, but reasonable. 6" right could be because your scope is canted slightly. Or it could just be the different load. What you are seeing is somewhat normal, just a little more than I'd expect. I would check to make sure your scopes crosshairs are truly vertical. That might explain the shooting to the right.

Some guns do a better job of shooting different bullet weights to virtually the same point at 100 yards with heavier bullets usually hitting predictably lower at longer ranges. Other guns, not so much.

Did you clean the barrel before switching to the other ammo? Different powders & jacketed or all copper bullets make a difference.

When you shoot a rifle, the barrel vibrates in several different dimensions. The different velocity of the bullets will cause them to stay in the barrel for different durations, so they will exit the barrel at different points in the barrel's vibration. Some devices like the Browning BOSS system give you a little control over the barrel harmonic to allow you to tune your barrel to your chosen load.

Thanks for all the replies. I was kind of thinking that it had to do with velocity of the different weight bullets. I will get back to the range and sight it in with what I will be shooting al the time.
