Looking for a good bolt action .308

Just because. Not for hunting. I just dont have a good bolt action and I dont have a .308 yet.

I am looking at the FN PBR [PATROL BOLT RIFLE] shown above. One at my local shop and I have handled it. I like how solid it is.

Any other suggestions?

There's nothing wrong with the 308 or the FN. FN owns USRA - the company that made Winchester rifles - and the PBR is very similar to the Win M70. Almost every rifle manufacturer makes a 308, just shop around and see what you like and what fits you best.

Ditto.

I waited years and years to finally buy a .308 / 7.62x51mm.
Finally. . . . I bought a SAI M1A.

Kind of in the same boat. I had a rifle similar to that FN PBR - a Winchester Model 70 Stealth in .308 but sold it. I'm more into a somethting with a wood stock and Mauser style feed rather than push feed. I guess it depends on what you want and like.

I'm leaning towards a CZ 550.

Prob going to get the same answers across the board to my best bet is prob to keep eyes and ears open for chances to shoot a variety of different makes/models. Based solely on "Fondle Factor" I like the FN rifles. That are fat and snubby and just seem solid. I love wood stocks also, but only when they are old. i.e. My M1 Garand. Newer wood doesn't do it for me.

Huge, biased fan of the .308 here -- it's great for just about everything you're likely to hunt. A bunch of Colorado natives prefer the .308 for elk, but I'm not quite there yet.

The FN PBR is an exceptionally nice gun for the price. It is also butt-ugly. Nonetheless, I value the full-length aluminum pillar block, action quality, and barrel accuracy. Mine wears Warne lock rings and a VX-III 3.5-10x40 B&C up top.

The rifle is heavier than its CZ counterpart, but that's no big issue for me as mine was always intended as a deer stand gun. For that purpose, I'll take accuracy over heft any day. If I have to walk around much, I'll pick up my Kimber Montana .308 (w/ Leupold FX-III 6x42 and Talley lightweights).

Most production rifles will outshoot most shooters at any reasonable range ( assuming not shooting sandbagged off the bench ) . Play in the " used rack " that still has scopes on them untill you get the one that fits you . Then either buy that rifle , or look for that model . The rifle should feel slightly " short " when you try it in shirt sleeves to allow room for a coat ( its easyer to adjust to a short pull than it is to adjust to an over long one ) . Length howeaver can be easily changed .. height of the comb tho cannot , so pay attention are you getting a full scope circle with the crosshairs in the middle when you sholder it . If not you may need a higher or lower comb than that rifle has . I personaly treat rifle fit real similar to shotgun fit , sholder the arm with a target in mind , and eyes closed , then open my eyes . If i am looking thro the scope at or reasonably near the target with a full view ( allowing for too long and too short of a mounting on scope ) then it pretty much will do what i need. FN should be a fine choice btw as is .308 for an all around rifle with cheap ammo readily avalable .

Maybe a Rem 700 in .308?

I went with the Rem 700 LTR in .308, I really like mine, very smooth action.

Helpless,

I've got an FN SPR in .308, and FN puts out a fine product. The only thing I would suggest you do if you get it, is lighten the trigger pull.

I was in roughly the same boat a couple years ago, but I was also trying to decide between a bolt axn vs. a semi auto. Then I stumbled across a used M1A at a really good price. Great round any way you cut it ;)

My brother has the Rem 700 synthetic in .308 Win and I have to mention that it is an excellent rifle for the money.:D
