308 or 243?

The OP was asking about the wrong calibers,;) only @Nature Boy can shoot a decent 308 and nobody shoots a 243anymore :D

Not me, my daughter. She is better than I am with the .308

The first time she ever shot at 600 yards was her first F Class match and she beat everyone with a 597 out of 600…including her old man

As far as 243 is concerned, John Widden is pretty good

Just a hypothetical question- if you wanted a bolt action heavy barrel rifle for target shooting from 100 - 600 yards and your only options were 243 Win or 308, which would you want and why?
308 or 243?

I try to choose a cartridge based on the game and terrain. Me, I am going with the .308 Win simply because it offers me a wide range of bullets. I am not saying the .243 Win is a poor choice for whitetail deer as it has taken plenty. I am simply saying I like the .308 as for me it offers more versatility overall. Another cartridge spawn of the .308 I like is the 7mm-08 not mentioned.

Bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, wind deflection.

What’s the advantage for bullet weight? Maybe the extra recoil which pushes the scope farther off target so the shooter misses trace and splash? Wind deflection as an advantage? It’s one click difference at 600yrds. The BC advantage doesn’t mean much when there’s a mil and a half more drop at 600yrds due to the lower velocity.

So how come the 243 Win isn’t called 6mm-08?

Because at the time it was made we where AMERICANS. In the 1950's when this country was actually great and a world leader we did what we wanted. Now, the old dog no longer holds his head up high, the old dog has been beaten many times by new masters telling him he is a bad dog, it is his fault others respect and perhaps fear him, his days of strong and wise leadership are well behind him. So today he sits on the porch, suns his bones on a crisp and cool autumn evening and wonders just how this has happened. Then he looks to the side and sees a cat, a siamese cat. The cat looks at this old fat and once strong dog, knows this old beast is no longer a threat to him, but he still has some things of use. A sharp cool breeze kicks up, and that cat feels the chill. That fat old hound is good for something, it is warm, That cat goes over to the once proud dog steps on him and climbs upon his back, claws out she kneads her resting spot and lays down......you are still good for something old dog.

The dog sighs, and just lays there....and hopes the next morning will just not come.

Quit picking on the .308, you’re hurting my feelings :(

And barrel life will be less. There is no free lunch.

You’re wrong about barrel life here. Barrel life with 6BR is effectively identical to 308win, and around 3x longer than 243win.

It’s not a free lunch - the 6BR is an easier round to tune and reliably proves to smaller than either of these others - and it uses less powder to run ~400-500fps slower than 243win with the same bullet, and about the same speed as 308 with a much lighter bullet.

Once a fella starts shooting 6 mm Norma and variants it’s pretty easy to see the path forward.
My old friend Stan Taylor told me he shot a deer at 800 yards with his, I asked what happed to the deer and he replied.. it died.

There is always something "better", but there are always "costs". Custom barrel, wild cat, barrel life, the list never ends. Like most things in life there is no "wrong" answer to this question.

I have a couple k rounds on a 6 br, I can’t say the accuracy will match the barrel life nor can I say it will rival a 308 in duration but it’s still shooting about 2 in groups at 500 yards.
That’s not exactly competitive.

There’s no additional cost to buy a custom barrel in 6 BR than 308.

There IS additional cost to pay more for 30cal bullets and 50% more powder when using 308win than 6 BR.

You spouted BS and now have to backpedal to inapplicable generalism. It would be easier if you just admit you don’t know of what you speak when the big kids are talking 6BR.
