.308 vs .311 bullet

on some reloading datas i see them calling for a .308 bullet for a 7.62x54R while others call for a .311......does that mean i can use either?....btw, i slugged the barrel and it came out to .313...just wondered why the datas would be different

With a bore of .313 the smaller .308 bullets are almost garenteed to shoot like crap. Much more common .308 bullets can work surprisingly well in a tighter bore (.311 or less) I did a test awhile back shooting .308 and .311 diameter bullets in a CZ527 with a .3105" bore and found there to be no diffrence in accuracy between the two diameters.

The diffrence in data reflects that many firearms chambered for 7.62x54R have much tighter bores, but with your .313 it ain't gonna happen, stick with the larger bullets

I shoot the Speer .311 Hot Core and the Hornady .312 SP both in 150 Gr. flat base bullets in my M44 as bad as my eyes are, I get about 1" to 2" groups using those bullets and Reloader #15 powder. The Mosins 7.62 x54r that uses the .308 bullets are the Remington Arms rifles made for the Russians here in the states and the Finn rifles chambered for the 7.62 x 54r cartridge.

I guess it's true, things get shorter in the cold. Wait 'till I tell the wife.

My best shooting Mosin is a Hungarian M44, but the barrel slugs out at .316. 308 bullets in it and I might as well just throw them blind folded.

A gas checked 170-200 grn cast bullet, sized to .314" .

if your bore slugs to .313", some .312" .303 British bullets should work pretty well I'd think.Midway has 'em.

i really need to slug my bore. that said, i reload all my x54R to .311 at the smallest.. for a little while i was considering using 7.62x39 at .310 but accuracy woudl suffer far too much and i am willing to spend the exdtra $.

.312 woudl probably be best in any M39 or M91/30 for that matter. but .312 is expensive - $18 a box of 100 as opposed to $13 a box of 100 for .311.

what type of powder are you using? I'm just using the cheapest available, which for me right now is Winchester 748. If anyone knows of a cheap surplus powder to use (like the ones they sell in SGN at 8lb containers, do please let me know.

Well, before WWII, the cartridge was 7,62 x 53.5R. It's just that when the metric cartridge designations were standardized, the Russians took one side and the Finns took the other. The story is on one of the MN websites.

The 53R is the same cartridge, but a slightly different permutation of it. The length is slightly shorter as you can see on Lapua brass. The differences are of minimal importance unless you're shooting a match-grade Finn or some of the pre-war Finns that had no "D" bore modification. The 53R these rifles shoot has tighter tolerances. You don't see many of these stateside though.
