I bought a box of .308 150 gr Hornady GMX bullets today for my Savage chambered in .308 Win. It said right on the box to use load data for regular 150 gr bullets. I got home and proceeded to load the bullets with 44.5 gr of varget (which I use with the 150 gr Hornady interlocks) and felt that sickening crunch as the powder compressed due to the longer length of the GMX bullet. Has anyone loaded these GMX compressed with Varget? If so were they safe to shoot? The bullet is a lot longer than a standard bullet. Hornady should mention that they will compress the load.

Won't generally hurt anything. If you use a long drop tube with stick power it will be lower in the case (more compacted) and may be enough to stop the crunch of compressing the powder when seating.

I am going to give it a try with the compressed load of 44.5 gr of varget. I was just curious if anyone else had used 44.5 gr of varget with 150 gr GMX bullet and lived.
