What powder do you reccomend for loading .308 match bullets? I have IMR 3031. Some swear by it. What do you guys say?

Depending on your bullet weight, BL-C(2), H322, H335, and Varget are all good choices. Others will swear by either H or IMR4895 My personal favorite has been Varget in my NM Springfield M1A.

Tried most of them and ended up with 4064 for the 168/175gr range of bullets.

I use IMR 3031 for my .308 loads. It was the first powder that I tried and I see no reason to switch. It's a good powder and since it fills 70% of the case, the chances of a double charge are reduced to a minimum.

My dad swears by h380 at 47.7gr with a 165gr sierra game king I used that load for hunting last month, but I used a 165gr horandy sst and it worked great. I got my first doe with my new to me Remington 788 with 1 shot at around 150 yards. My practice rounds are remington 165gr boat tails with h335 at 39.3gr and they seem to shoot well at 100 yards not very tight groups but i think it's more me then the ammo since my dad who if left handed using my right hand 788 can put my practice rounds side by side at 100 yards off hand.

Having several 308's that I load for, Alliant R15, Hodgdon Varget and IMR-4895 are simular in burn rate and work well. While I use IMR-3031 in other cartridges I have not in the 308 but would agree it's a tad fast.

There are so many propellants that work well in the .308 Win that it's impossible to pick the best. I know several target shooters who use nothing but 748 because it meters evenly and delivers uniform velocities in the .308.

I consider IMR 4895 the "best" overall, with IMR 4064 second.

Though I am starting to use Varget and it is an excellent powder.

I shot two pounds of estate sale IMR 3031 with 168's, it will clean the target out to 300 yards. Probably further, but I used a different load at 600 yards.

A bud received a M40X in 308 from Remington. They send a target verifying that the rifle will shoot 1/2 MOA. My recollection was they used 37.5 grains IMR 3031 with a 168 SMK.

I prefer stick powders to ball powders. I don't believe being able to throw ball powders precisely actually means anything on target.

These are oddballs but I've recently had good luck with Reloder 10x and even better luck with AA2230. The AA2230 gives me better velocity than the 10x and meters just as good if not better.

After playing around with Varget, H4895 and IMR-4895, I've settled on IMR4895 with my 168 gr Nosler HPBT's. I was completely unimpressed with Varget, H4895 worked ok, but IMR4895 really shot some groups.:)
