Think the Bearcat cylinder is large enough to make a 5-shot 32 H&R mag? Is the loading gate large enough?

I think this would be a handy little piece, especially in 4 and 5/8. If it were as simple as making a cyl and barrel, any ideas as to what it is likely to cost?

If it were as simple as making a cyl and barrel...

This must be some new definition of the word "simple" that I'm not familiar with. :uhoh: ;)

Unfortunately, I sold my Bearcat, so I can't grab the mics and check.

I'd favor use of a steel-frame Bearcat over one of the zamak variants for the project. What would be kewl is if Ruger would just catalog such a gun as a factory item. Of course, it would be smaller than a canned ham...

Their has been a lot of pleading to Sandy (president of the company) over at North American Arms to upsize one of their mini-revolvers and chamber it in a .32 caliber cartridge. A year or so ago there were rumors to the effect that they were actually going to do so, but AFAIK they were nothing but rumors.

Doesn't Forest Gump say something about simple that's appropriate?

Anyway, if this thread has become a wish list I wish Ruger would put the 41 mag into a GP100

I'd check with one of the Ruger SA oriented gunsmiths around the country and see if they've done it already. I imagine it's been done, if it's possible.

I'm not a 41mag fan, but I would love to have more power in a GP100 size gun. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

MtBiker- what bike do you ride? I actually sold two guns to buy a Jamus MT bike- last years Cross Country.

What revolver do you take with you while riding in the woods?

I usually take either a khukuri or Smith 4" 41. (Sometimes the 45/8" BH 45) I'd like to know from another biker what kind of carrying strategy you may have developed.

munk

Well, I haven't done much riding for the past three years, but I have a Klein Pulse (1998 model, most of the components are Y2000 or older). When I did ride in places where a firearm wouldn't be illegal, I carried a S&W 36 in the external pouch of my Blackburn camelback knockoff. I was, and still am, parnoid about losing or damaging a firearm while biking offroad.

Chris

Why do you worry about that? Isn't that part of the exchange for carrying a gun?

There are too many MT Lions where I live not to carrry something while hiking or riding, especially when I'm with my sons. There was a MT Biker attacked by a lion in BC. He only survived because a motorist saved him.

No. There have been EXPEN$IVE conversions to 32 S&W. The Single Six in 32 H&R/32 S&W Long is what Ruger makes. They are not available in 32-20 due to length.

Methinks that you might have to relocate the firing pin in such a conversion. Bearcat is rimfire - 32 H&r isn't. Frame modifications are usually co$tly little rascals!!!!!

It would probably be a lot cheaper to find a S&W model 30 and ream the the chambers out to H&R mag specs.

I worry because it's a real possibility and I do not want to lose or damage a firearm. I've landed on my back, front, side, etc. There's nowhere I could carry a gun that would be completely safe. I don't mind minor dings and scratches, but hitting the ground (especially when rocky) at 15+mph can hurt a gun.

I've been mountain biking for 20 years now. I can count on one hand the number of black bears I've seen. I've never seen a mountain lion (they're not real common on the east coast).

We'll try to send you some. We have extra.

I've a shoulder bag I sometimes stick the revolver in. But the bag swings back around in front of me and throws the balance off, of course.

I need to start thinking of a semi perminantly attached holster arrangement with the bike. Something that will not allow the vibration and hits to injure the gun.

My Bike is a Jamus Dakar Cross Country, btw I have no idea what the elite would think of such a purchase.

I considered the frame mount option as well. Dunno if they're still being made, but you used to be able to get a pack that fit into the corner of the frame under the top tube, in front of the seat tube. It had an integral shoulder strap for portaging. But, I'm not crazy about offbody carry. And, I've been in wrecks where the bike went tumbling end over end.

In the end, I'm just not comfortable carrying while riding. It's too easy to lose or damage a firearm, IMO. I'm ok with it while road biking. Mountain biking is the only pasttime that finds me in the forest unarmed. I have no problem if others do it. It just doesn't work for me.

OOps. Sorry if I confused you with the 'elite' reference- I really just wanted to know if you had any opinion about the bike. "Elite" came to mind because a very nice man at the local bike shop (200 miles away) said the Jamus was 'funny looking'.

I don't know what to do, MTBKR. What do you think some sort of suspension system, like a bag with a gun in it, held by bungie cords, would work? It is hard to think of any aperatus that wouldn't harm the gun.

I'm too paranoid to ride in my hills without a gun.

I love this....excellent priorities.....

Of course hitting the ground (especially when rocky) at 15+mph can hurt other things as well

Tamara:

32-20 = 1.592 OAL
32 Mag = 1.350 OAL
32 S&W L = 1.280 OAL

------------------------------------------------------

The sale of ,32 Single-Six Vaquaro's has been modest. I doubt Ruger will spend any money developing a Bearcat version in any centerfire caliber.

Oh, ok. I honestly don't have an opinion of it. They're not real common around here. I used to see them in SW Va, but not in any great numbers. I remember when the Dakar came out, but that's about it.

I wouldn't worry about someone saying it's "funny looking". Lots of bikes are funny looking one year and passe the next. Check out the "elevated chainstay" bikes of 12 years ago. They looked weird, then normal, then old hat. Now, that design is being massaged into the frame geometry for rear suspension.

Hard to say. If it's safe and secure, it'll be hard to get to, and vice versa. Tough call. I haven't looked into in some time, but I'm sure some of the more tactical "camelback" systems might accomodate that need. That way, it stays on your body so you'll have it when you're off the bike.

Lol! Well, I know how to land and I heal too. I've never broken a bone or been too hurt to get home.

I HAVE SEEN BUT NOT SHOT BEARCAT CONVERSIONS IN

32 S&W LONG and in 32 H&R MAGNUM.
Both were delightful pistols but the price to have one of my own made me appreciate the S&W M631 4" at home along with the other four or five 32LONG and 32MAGNUM resting contentedly in the safe awaiting their next appointment with destiny.

I have a 6" model 16 at home. This is really a nice weapon and cartridge- 32 mag. I wonder how much they're worth today?

munk

I just wish Ruger would put the .32 Mag back in the adjustable sighted Single-Sixes. The ones they made years ago are selling for stupid money now.

That 's the story of good guns everywhere. A weapon cartridge combo is introduced, many agree it is a great idea, but there are not enough sales. Then it's discontinued and becomes a collector's item, and no one can afford it.
