32 H&R Magnum -- a useful caliber, or obsolete?

Was kinda hoping that either the H&R or the Federal would take off in popularity and that someone would put out a lever action rifle in it.

Only thing I'm interested in is a lever for small game. Guess it's not to be.

Neither are obsolete, but they sure aren't exactly popular either.

Henry just came out with a lever action in 327 Federal. It's on the Lipsey web catalog.

My LGS checked and none yet in stock.

IIRC, Marlin made a run of 32 mag carbine a while ago. o_O

I can promise you Browning if that guy gets $4000 for his mine is going up for sale. And I mean right now. But I will sell mine for the low low price of just $3500. I will send you a PM so you can have first shot at it too.

I thought when i saw one that sold for $3200 it would never happen again. Trust me, They aren't worth that much. The 357s are better.

Well thank you, that's good of you to include me in your thoughts. :)

All kidding aside I would like to get a .32 lever action at some point. I just think it'll be after I get into reloading a bit more.

Don't the .357's have problems shooting .38's?

The 357s have no problems with 38s as far as I can tell. My Marlin eats them like candy. The Rossi I had decades ago ran fine on them. Two buddies have Rossis and they feed 38s just fine. I have a 44 mag but have never owned a single 44 special round so I can't comment on them.

I did modify the back of my barrel by putting a small radius on it and that took care of the bump when cycling SWC bullets. Sorta like the radius some put on a revolver cylinder to make it easier to use speed loaders. A small chamfer. The back of the barrels from the factory are sharp.

Hunting and plinking aside, a lighter, smaller carbine with a higher round capacity chambered in 327 Federal would make one bad-to-the-bone self defense gun.

Cool, thanks for the info. I've just always heard that.

The press release I saw announcing the 327 Henry said it would shoot 327 Federal and 32 H&R Magnum.

The release didn't mention 32 S&W long.

If it'll shoot 32 mag, it'll also shoot 32 Long. However, feeding COULD be another story. :uhoh:

I just got a few boxes of the Double Tap 32 H&R Magnum 60 gr all Copper hollow point.

While lighter than most 32 revolver loads, it goes much faster, has high muzzle energy, and tests I've read show good expansion even from short barrel snubs.

Does anyone carry or have experience with this load?

I haven't used that bullet in the 32 mag, but I have used that bullet for 32 acp rounds and expansion is very good from a Walther PP. At the velocity published for that load by DT, I would think that expansion would be.... aggressive! But, such expansion from those velocities might limit penetration. I personally lean to the heavier cast bullets for my 32 mag loads, but since you're using a revolver, you could always leave the last two cylinders loaded with something heavier just in case.

I have a Ruger .327 - I prefer to shoot the venerable 32 H&R Mag. Just more pleasurable and very accurate. I stock all of the variants that will shoot out of this gun.

I needed the perfect place for post #900, so, if I got it right, this is it!
I have exactly ONE unfired firearm...a DAVIS Derringer in .32 H&R Magnum. And one box of ammo for it.
I will, post-haste, be out after the New Year to fire this little unit! It's been around WAY too long NIB...yep, I'm gonna deflower this virgin.

at the harrisburg gun show i found 300 new starline .32 mag cases and a used set of rcbs .32 mag dies with #23 shell holder 50.00. i have about 100 cases i have been loading with .32 S&W dies for my .32 mag ruger single six, but these new cases will last me for a long time. i also have a marlin 94 in .32 mag, but have not fired it yet.eastbank.

I seldom see ammo for 32 H&R. So, I made a decision to pass on that caliber although it certainly has some appeal to me for a lower powered carry gun.

Since I mostly order on-line the scarcity does not bother me. Plus there are two LGS that will order smaller quantities for me, which avoids the high shipping costs.

Lately I have been using my S&W M631 for an informal bullseye match, as I think mastering the small J frame in DA will serve me well with bigger guns.
