.32 S&W Long Ballisitics

Anyone here have any idea how deeply the .32 S&W long penetrates in ballistic geletin?

I have found some data supporting the .32 ACP but not the .32 S&W long.

Specifically, if anyone can provide me with information on how well .32 S&W long 98gr wadcutters travelling at 720ft/s penetrate, I would be most grateful.

Let Me Put It This Way. They're Sorta Like 22lr Hp's With Delusions Of Grandeur.

They will knock the stew outta small game like squirrels and rabbits.
Now, when those HBWC bullets are loaded to 850-900FPS from my 32S&W LONG handloads it is quite amazing how they whack the stuffin's outta things.

Yes I know it's not ideal...

.....but for the sake of ballistics education, will a .32 S&W long wadcutter round fired from a 5" barrel be able to penetrate at least 6"s into ballistics gel at 9 yards?

Is the factory load enough for most use or is it downloaded to protect the older guns. Do we need to reload these rounds to get enough from them?

Handloading will give you a better .32 Long round, but many folks don't like reloads for SD. For a carry round I'd go with one of the .32 Automatic hollowpoints. The Winchester silvertip is a good one.

I have S&W J-frame revolvers chambered for .32 S&W Long. The .32 ACP shoots and extracts perfectly from each one. Accuracy is quite good.

I personally wouldn't use a .32 Long as a defense gun,even with handloads,but they are fun to shoot.I have my great grandmother's S&W Hand Ejector which was the first gun I ever shot when I was 8 years old.
It's nickel with the original Gutta Percha grips and has a great smooth long action. My great grand father carried it in his pocket when walking from his business to the bank for his daily deposit. It's 1920 vintage.The factory round,as stated is pretty good for small game and pests.

Is it true, you can safely use .32S&W Long in Nagant revolvers?

I've done the Nagant .32 thing even with a few 32 mags! I don't know how safe this really is though and I probably will lay off the mags from now on. I've heard of shooting 32auto in 32 long guns but I have not done it.

Resistence fighters would use available .32 long ammo in the .32/20 spanish revolvers used in some numbers by the French in WW1 and still around in WW2 and the various Nagant revolvers both gas seal and the other Nagants in 7.5mm by wrapping the lower portion of the casing with cigarette paper until it made a tight fit in the chamber. I think they did the same with the Lebel though with less success due to the Lebels larger boresize.

Paper is Incompressible when tightly wrapped and confined.
