32 year old reloads, need advice.

I agree with wallkalong, pull a few to verify the weight is close to what is on the box. If no corrosion shoot them.

Seems to be two camps here on THR, check a few and if ok shoot them or pull them apart and reload them with confidence in the knowledge that I know for a fact what is going on. I personally have one foot in each camp, I like the idea of a hand from beyond guiding the bullet to the target and filling the freezer and at the same time I’m not much of a gambler.

The way I see it at this point is that I don’t HAVE to gamble on unknown results even though they’re probably fine to shoot. I have plenty of factory stuff on hand that makes a gamble unnecessary. When the weatherman says it may rain and it may not I always make sure to have an umbrella just in case.

I’m going to pull them apart and start fresh even though from what I’ve seen, measured and weighed they should be fine to shoot. I have plenty of house plants that could use a shot of fertilizer. I’ll work up my own loads with the case, primer and bullets and my choice of powder if I can settle on a powder that will do.223/5.56 and 30-30 WELL. Still reading up on what works well for others in that regard and the list is hard to narrow down without actually loading something up and trying it my own rifles.

Thanks everyone for all the advice!

Dave

Unfortunately there are a LOT of OK propellants that will work passably with both mentioned but no one that will work BEST in them both I am afraid. I get best performance with 223 5.56 using TAC. The IMR 3031 works best for me in 30-30 and 32 SPL that I load for depending on bullet weight. I would buy a LB of whatever propellant you want to try after comparing the manuals and test it in both of them. Your results, in your firearms may be different than mine.

1TwistedGimp asked:
What is the shelf life of what I’m assuming is (IMR?) 3031?

I'm still shooting ammunition that I reloaded with IMR 3031 in the 1980-1982 timeframe and I am getting velocities comparable to what I was getting 30+ years ago, so I would not be concerned about the powder's durability.

What I would be concerned about is whether or not I knew the reloader to trust his reloads in my gun. I have just one friend who is a reloader whose product I would trust, but its because he and I grew up reloading together and produce reloads using the same process. Other than that, I break down any ammunition I receive and re-process it myself.
