I usually spend more time reading than writing on this forum, but I figured I'd throw myself out there for this one. Does anyone reload for the .327 Federal Magnum? I recently stumbled upon a new Ruger SP101 in .327 for a price I couldn't pass up. I have the dies, brass, bullets, primers, and several powders to choose from (IMR4227, H110, Lilgun, HP38, etc.). I've done the math ((KE=MxV^2)/450,435)) and the numbers I'm seeing (ref. Hodgdon 2015 Annual Reloading Manual) and the resulting KE seems very low for a 100 gr Hornady XTP. Any help/thoughts out there? I have a few hundred pieces of brass eagerly awaiting your collective input.

Sorry, I'm just starting on the .327 myself. Am interested to see what others are doing out there with it.

I'll likely shoot more .32 long and .32 Mag out of it than anything.

I load for it and shoot out of a 2" SW snubby. I like Power Pistol and 2400. I have loaded with H110 but it's a lot of flash. The 100 grain XTP screams, I do not have my data here but the velocity was over 1,000 fps.

Do a search I think there are several threads on it here.

I'm going to start working some up using Accurate #9 - I'll post my results. I have made up light plinking loads using a 90 grain lead SWC over 3.0 grains of Trail Boss; accurate and a soft recoil, genuinely fun to shoot. 3 grains is about mid-range of the recommended Trail Boss loading - I chose it because my 0.7 cc Lee dipper consistently throws that weight, which made putting them together that much simpler.

I found a bit of information. I'm gonna stuff the 100 gr XTPs over some test loads of 4227 and maybe some Lilgun with CCI500's and I'll post the results. Thanks for the input.

Just started loading for a the Ruger 7-shot revolver with 5" barrel myself. So far I have tried Win 231, 2400 and H4227. So far this gun seems to prefer 11.6 grs. of 2400 under a 85 gr Hornady XTP. I'm still working up a load for the H4227 but so far it seems very promising. I've tried 5.7 and 5.9 grs. of Win 231 and at 5.7 the cases stuck in the cylinder. Once I upped the load to 5.9 they extracted okay (I believe the max is 6 grs.). I believe I got all of this data from Hodgdon's web site so you might want to check their load data for this round.

If you are loading XTPs routinely, you should own the Hornady #9 manual and use the loads indicated. Also note that Speer has a supplement for 327 Federal Magnum, which you can find on their site and print out.

Just glancing at the Hornady #9 Manual ... looks like AA#9 gives some fairly speedy 90 & 100 grain loads ... Hodgdon shows W296/H110 to be the top cat ... with the 100 gr....

Brian Pierce wrote a real good article in Handloader about a year and half ago. It included several pages of excellent data. I've found I prefer #2400.
10.0gr of #2400 under a Lee 113gr RFN-gc @.314" is my favorite "magnum" load.

I've been reloading 327 for about 4 years. I shoot them out of a 2" Taurus, 4" Target Patriot and a 5.5" Blackhawk. I won't list specific loads because some of the best loads I found were extrapolated before 327 data was plentiful.

I shoot lead for the most part with XTP's every now and then. I've narrowed it down to MBC's cowboy #6 and their 32-20 bullets. Ive pushed the coated version of the 32-20 projectiles surprisingly hard in the Blackhawk. Haven't had good luck with plated, I think it was Berry's I tried that were on the light side. Somewhere around 80-ish grains. I really do like the 120 grain 32-20 bullet the most for ease of loading, it was easy to get it shooting good.

For the powders you named, I've used H110 and hp38. The H110 was my go to for full house loads but 2-3 years ago I couldn't find it. So, I moved to Ramshot Enforcer and haven't went back. It shoots really well for me in the longer barrels with the 120 grain. The HP38 was the best for light loads using the 100 grain #6. HS-6, CFE pistol and blue dot are worth mentioning as decent performers for me.

The 327 Fed is easy to load for IMO, from light plinkers to some that are a surprising handful when you consider its "just a 32".

Loads for 327

I've spent a lot of time working with my 327 Blackhawk. Here's what I came up with:

100g plated flat nose, 10.8g of ACC #9, V=1370 fps

Cast Lead flat nose 115g, with gas check Lyman #2 lead, 9.8g of 2400, V=1318fps.

Both of the above loads are accurate and the cast bullet does not lead much.

Good luck.

If you weren't aware the Single 7s have a short cylinder. This means deep seating w/ heavyweight bullets. The load data isn't apples to apples when loading for the Single 7s. The Handloader article mentioned pertains to the Single 7.

I've burnt up a lot of H110 and W231 in mine. Have the full compliment of Single 7s and the SP101. W231 is great for middle of the road loads. So is Bullseye and other fast burners. I personally don't use Lil'Gun. The drawbacks are to great for me. I haven't gotten around to using 2400 but I'd expect close to H110 performance.

I have a Ruger 5-1/2" barrel Single Seven.

The Speer website lists their 100 gr GDHP with Alliant 2400 in a range of 10.5 to 12.5 gr.

I couldn't get anywhere near the top of the range without sticking brass. Middle range of 11.4 gr is my preferred load. Still hot, but doesn't beat up the gun or the brass.

According to their velocity data (I don't have a chronograph), I should be getting just above 1400 f/s. Although, they used a 3" SP101, so I could be higher than that.

Later, I found the 100 gr XTP at the same load to be even more accurate in my gun, so I switched.

I couldn't get anywhere near the top of the range without sticking brass.

Multiple reports of defective cylinders, mine included. Probably not the fault of the load. I bought a finishing reamer.

I think .327 is a great round to reload, kind of the reason an SP101 is on my wish list. It can be loaded as light as a .32 S&W Long to hot reaching nearly .357 figures.

I remember Speer was making 115 grain Gold Dots. Is anybody making 115 grain .32 bullets anymore?

I have all the equipment but haven't started loading for my .327 Ruger single 7
yet. I'm just happy to hear that there are so many guys using this caliber.
Everyone says it will be obsolete in a very short while. I think it is a heck of
a fine caliber.

Yes, but they tend to only be lead and not jacketed. I can't find much in the way of speer bullets anywhere, especially in 32 (I'd love some 115gr gold dots or even 100gr Gold Dots). If you're looking at sites that filter by cartridge instead of caliber, look at bullets for the 32-20, as 115gr is common for those.

I've used Lil' Gun and H110 and found them a bit harsh, with a fair amount of spitting back in my face. Unless you're looking for max velocity, you may find some other powders a lot more comfortable to shoot. I use primarily SNS Casting 90 or 100 grain coated flat point bullets. I have found WSF and Longshot to work well and give me accurate and enjoyable loads. AA#7 also works pretty well, and AutoComp gives a nice mid-range target load. I think my overall favorite so far is WSF. It also works well in .32 H&R loads.

I have 3 of them so I must like them.
I keep my loads simple.
Unique for cast loads and 2400 for Magnum XTP loads.
I do have a few LilGun loads. Very impressive load. I just carry those and dont shoot them much.
LilGun has a history of cutting forcing cones. But it adds at least 100 fps to my best load. Emergency use only.
