327 mag / 32 mag

I like 32 mag. I am thinking of getting a 327 to shoot them. The S&W 32 mag snubby's cost too much.
It is a good round for women to shoot in a snub.

327 mag / 32 mag
Are the catridges the same length between these two?

327 Federal Mag has much higher pressure than the 32 H&R Mag. 327 has a longer case as well. If you get a 327 Fed Mag revolver, you can shoot 327 Fed Mag, 32 H&R Mag, 32 S&W Long, 32 S&W if you can find it, and even 32 ACP if absolutely necessary.

Ive been considering one as well. I want the Ruger SP101 in .327. I know ammo is expensive and could be scarce one day. But it would be fun to shoot and practical for my wife.

Its all about the extra round. I doubt that it has any more real life stopping power than a good .38 load even though the ballistics seem good. I have a Taurus 38 my wife is good with. If she likes the Ruger I might load it for her instead.

And if not, well, I would still have fun shooting it. Especially the lighter 32 loads.

First of all, the .327 Federal Magnum is about to expire. Taurus and Charter Arms dropped their such offerings last year. S&W introduced a new one last year and both they and Ruger still list their such offerings - just try to find them. I bought mine, a pricey 2 1/8" hammerless 632 Pro, SKU #178046, last September after a year and a half of production delays. I haven't seen either a 632 or a Ruger .327 in a local store since.

Secondly, don't believe the 'kicks like a .38' dribble. At 44kpsi max, that cartridge can rock and roll, witness the 1300+ fps 115gr Gold Dot. Even with some 60 Pro grips on my 632 Pro, they produce a '.357 Magnum in a J-frame' style 'Howdy' in the recoil. Now, my leftover .32 S&WL homebrews, 96gr LRNFP at ~700 fps, hit a bit low - but are fun. I like my 632 Pro - had wanted it since two years ago - but would consider other ways to spend that much moola, if I had it to do over. Try to find brass to reload. Heck, try to find .327 Federal Magnum ammo! Below are my two .32's - the 632 Pro and an NEF #73 in .32 H&RM - at least that cartridged waned for 20 yr before fading away!

Yeah, the 632 Pro is purdy.... it'll make a handsome paperweight for the desk one day!

I like the 32 rounds. I don't have the 327 and don't plan on getting one either. I seldom shoot full power 32 mags so a 327 won't fill any 32 caliber needs for me. If I need more power than the 32mag has I just grab a 357.

I have a S&W 431PD 32 mag snubby and love it. It weighs 15oz loaded. Its my night stand gun. I normally keep it loaded with wadcutter bullets loaded to about 850fps. Thats more than enough speed to get those lead pills into a mans chest.

I managed to find my holy grail of handguns about a year ago. A S&W model 631 with a 4" barrel and adjustable sights. Man thats a slick piece of work.

I also own several S&W models 30 and 31. These are chambered for the 32 S&W long. They can sometimes be found for a little less than the 32 mags guns. I handload for them and since my guns are of newer make I can safely bump them up a little from the reloading manuel to around 850fps with a 100gr lead bullet. Being able to reload and cast my own bullets for the 32s makes them very cheap to shoot too.

Be careful buying any 32 caliber gun. They are very addictive. ;)

I already have 2 H&R revolvers, an R73 stainless and a R73 Ultra. The Ultra has adjustable sights and a 6" barrel, blued.

I am looking at reloading, will the 32 components die out along with factory loads?

CarlJ I don't think you have to worry about the 32 stuff going anywhere. If the goofball in the whitehouse gets reelected there most likely will be another run on guns and supplies. Just start stocking up now and stack em deep. I have so much powder, primers, cases and lead that I never felt a bump 4 years ago. But I learned my lesson back about 1996 IIRC and have never run low on supplies since.

I am not up on the H&R guns so I am not familiar with the 73 models you listed. Can you show pics?

If S&W would make one in a K or L frame, I would seriously consider buying one, but I would load it to .32 Long and Mag levels for most shooting..

Ratshooter look at the pic on this thread of the 73, mine is just like that only SS. The Ultra is just like it but with a 6' barrel.

Buy a mould or two so get lots more bullets and always available as long as there is lead. Lee offers 3 moulds here at $20 and lyman has the 313249, a 85gr. .21 BC boolit. Western bullet Co., Penn, Missouri all offer cast boolits cheaper than jacket. Have fun and bangaway.

What will the 327 do that the 32 H&R won't?

Louder Bang?

Higher velocity?

I'm getting almost 1200 fps out of my 32 H&R using published load data for 115 gr bullets and getting energy numbers that rival the 38 special +p (125 gr) numbers.

Penetration is impressive with 32 caliber (.313") bullets. Ain't no critter going to survive perforated lungs and/or Heart with a 32 cal. hole. A buddy of mine back East harvested a Deer with his 32 caliber (32-20) Marlin (which goes maybe 100 fps faster with the load he uses - 1300 fps) and it dropped right quick.

Tested the penetration of a few cartrides including the 32 caliber (32-20 getting a mere 1350 fps with a 115 gr bullet) through a cow and catching it in milk jugs. Went through 30" of Cow and caught it in the sixth milk jug.

You might not bleed out as fast with a 32 caliber wound but you ain't going to survive one in the boiler room.
