So, i am looking to get a .338-06 or a .35 whelen and cast my own bullets for it. I have found good molds for .35 caliber bullets, but the only .338 caliber mold i can find is a 200gr FP bullet. I am hoping for something like 250gr, and RN if possible. Does anyone know of someone who makes one? If not, waht is a good custom mold maker?

Thanks,

Neal

Lee does make the mould, and it IS available. RCBS and Lyman also make moulds, but are somewhat more expensive.

However, what is not available is GAS CHECKS.
They were discontinued about 2-3yrs ago, and I haven't seen any since. You possibly might find someone who has some on the shelf somewhere however.

Hopefully, if the .338Marlin catches on, the .338" gaschecks might make a comeback.

FWIW; You can still shoot the bullets without a gascheck, however velocity potential for accuracy will be reduced to about 1,500fps or so.

If building the rifle with consideration towards shooting cast bullets, I suggest you go with the .35Whelen. Be sure to get a faster twist than the normal 1/16 if you plan on shooting heavier bullets.

MMCRET--thanks, that looks good.

About gas checks....OUCH. That puts a seriuos damper on this idea....although the cast bullets are the the first use i want this rifle for, they are just for cheap pratice. (i have always wanted a .338-06...) Thanks for pointing that out.

I guess i will either wait or get a .35 whelen.
