What bolt action rifles do you like in this caliber? I am considering tactical and sporting configurations, takedown and screw-in barrel, controlled feed and push feed, straight pull and turnbolt.

Accuracy International. .338 Lapua can be a barrel burner, so this platform provides a great user serviceable rifle as far as barrel swaps are concerned.

Check out this Accuracy International video that I have mirrored:

AI demo video [147Megs]

i had the same ?

here is what i did .got a rem 700 sendero in 338 RUM used would be fine.had the accuracy work and bedding done by R.W.HART .they set it up as a switch barrel gun with a 28.5 inch barrel and a break.also a jewell trigger and skim bed.i bought the trigger and put it on myself.the whole package was 1601.00 not counding the gun just the barrel vice and tools need.that gave me a barrel for the gun an extra barrel, vice and action wrench.break and tool to remove brake.true up the action and bolt and skim bed the action.there work speaks for it's self they build benchrest rifles.im getting 3100 fps with a sierra 250 sbt bullets.they also lapped the scope rings.i thought they had tightened them also.they did not do it so i could adjust the scope for my eye .after i found the problem i only had 3 shots left to shoot and they went into about 3/8 of an inch at 117 yards.im sure it will do better after i work up a load for it.english is not my strong point so if i need to try it again let me know.they only had the gun for 25 or 30 days.after they get the barrels.i got one heck of a gun and 2 barrels for less than most of the guns you list.another way to go is to go with a savage they are already set up as a switch barrel gun.sierra can tell you who to contact.i ask because in the new book they used a lot of savages, thanks, keith

How does Accuracy International barrel takedown system compare to that of Dakota Arms? I find the Dakota 76 Mauser-derived action more appealing than the L96 snap-over extractor and plunger ejector.

With a bit of work, the Armalite AR-30 is quite workable (and very inexpensive). Replace that truck spring they use for a trigger return spring some polishing here and there, then the trigger becomes much more manageable.

Then again, I only have a 900 yard range so I'm not sure how it works at real distance.

I have an entirely stock AR-30, and it's a better shooter than I am (about 1/2-1/3MOA consistantly.)

GREAT rifle, though I have not shot any of the others on your list.

I also have a AR30-M. The fit and finish is generally quite good. The trigger is a bit thinner than I like but that is minor. The safety switch on the other hand does bother me to some extent. It is basically just a stamped peice of sheet steel. While it does work it doesn't exactly seem right on a rifle of this price range.

On the bright side how can you argue with a face like this?

And it has a serious MB. Makes shooting it like shooting something between a 223 and a 308. (Only MUCH louder) :D

And yes it's decently accurate too. The flyer is my bad. :)

I do want an AI AWM as well, but 5000 bucks for a rifle is a bit out of my league at this point. :p

FAL_Freak- the ONLY thing I don't like about my gun is the magazine rattle. My mags rattle when inserted in the gun. Have you found any way to fix this?

The safety is a little odd, but I rarely use safetys in my guns, so it's not a big deal (Rule 1: gun is ALWAYS loaded! ALWAYS!)

The brake really is awesome, isn't it? If it weren't for $3.50/round, this would actually make a decent beginner rifle. I've let many first-timers shoot, and they've ALL hit steel targets at 500yards with this gun, on the first or second shot with a rifle. Any rifle....

I'd really like to see .338LM come way down in price.

i almost got the ar-30

but it is not a switch barrel gun and it does not have jewell trigger.the big thing is R.W.HART never trued the action on it or skim beded it,thanks, keith

To ask a dumb question...

What sort of ballistics does a .338 LM have, and why should I want one over a .338 win, .330 Dakota, .340 Weatherby, .338 Ultra????

338 RUM

with a 250 gr sbt 3100 fps out of a 28.5 inch hart barrel and they are a lot cheaper than the LM 338.the bullets and bc is the same velocity is the difference.have not tried it yet with the 300 smk yet.some of the 338 LM have a 1 in 12 twist stay away from them is you need to shoot the 300 gr,thanks, keith

artherd - I wouldn't say my magazine rattles. It can be wiggled side to side and back and forth a bit with a firm hand, but it doesn't rattle on it's own from what I've noticed.

I hear ya completely on the 70 bucks a box of 20 price on factory ammo. (Black Hills I assume... Lapua branded ammo is even more spendy last I looked) To get around that one drawback of .338 Lapua I reload my own rounds. It fun and saves a bundle. (well actually not but I get to shoot it a lot more of the same outlay of cash) I am figuring it costs about $1.22 a shot with premium Nosler bullets if I can use the case only 5 times. (some claim up to ten times before noticable wear shows up on the brass) Plus with hand loads you can tailor the load to the rifle for even better accuracy. And it's fun. :D

FAL_Freak- Mag only noticably rattles if I shake the gun. I'm thinking this wouldn't be the ultimate weapon if I had to creep buy people who wanted to kill me (or possibly even hunt skittish big game.) withought the addition of some Felt somewhere in the magwell.

I'm going to be doing reloading as well, though even a buck twenty a round reloaded (plus my time) is pricy! (right now I'm shooting Lapua factory to ammass brass.)

My problem really is, the round is so addictively great, that I want to shoot it more than just about anything else I have!

.338LM and .338Ultra are in another leauge than even .338WinMag. 3,000+fps 250gr slug.

The .338Lapua was designed from the ground up to be a 'no comprimise' long-range accuracy cartridge. It was actually developed from a military requirement specifically for sniping human targets with body armour at 1,000+yards. It is a VERY accurate cartrdige, and it's only real competition is .338Ultra.

.338Ultra is cheaper, and actually has a few FPS on the Lapua. It is however not as accurate in my limited and un-scientific (different brands of rifles and ammo.) expierence.

.338Lapua is chambered in more guns (by far) than .338Ultra. British SAS Snipers have already offically adopted the AI AWM in .338LM.

To the answers given by John Taylor, a man with his own axe to grind as regards the .408 Cheyenne Tactical, I will add the point that, as an official NATO chambering, the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is here to stay, unlike the aforementioned passel of proprietary magnum rounds undistinguished by an official imprimatur and unassisted by military procurement.
