I want to load some target loads for my Rem 700 in 338 Win Mag. I am going to try 250 grain Sierra MatchKings first. What powders burn good in the 338 with bigger bullets? Also, I need to work up a load for bear hunting this fall, and may be using some lighter bullets, like Barnes, so any suggestions are great.
Thanks

Do you have a loading manual?

If not, you might consider the Sierra one, as it will be chock full of good loads for the .338 with all available Sierra bullet weights.

You might even be able to find one powder that will work well in both target & bear loads!

I have the Nosler #5, but its not their newest. I need to invest in the Sierra one, but lack the funds right now.

Well, the Nosler manual will work fine.

Just go through and pick a powder that is suitable for both bullet weights you intend to use.

Generally speaking, the powder that gives the best velocity, at near case capacity, will also be one of the more accurate ones.

I've always achieved excellent accuracy with IMR4831. Despite my protests on the method, a friend charges his 338 cases for 210 grain Nosler Partitions by dipping the case into the powder, then leveling it off across the mouth with a knife, then seating the bullet.:what:

The accuracy he gets is as good as anything I get by meticulously weighing out each charge.

I've had very good results using IMR-4350.

I tested many powders over my Ohler 35+P, and the powder that gave me the most accurate loads, with the most velocity, was most consistent, & showed the least standard deviation, was IMR-4350.

I tested two bullets thru all loadings, using two different .338 rifles, a Remington Alaskan, and a old Ruger 77 (first model). The bullets tested were the Nosler 210 & 250 grain partition.

Best of luck,

Richard

I have two .338 WM. They like IMR 4350, MR3100, and WW 760/H414, which are the same powder under different names.
