.338 WM Hog Rifle.....

I had to sell one of my AR's to pay my motorcycle mechanic. Man oh Man, owning an American Motorcycle and NOT being mechanically inclined is expensive!!

Anyway, I had a few hundred left over and a sad and empty place in the gun cabinet so I went looking for a .223 bolt action.

I came home with a Hog Rifle in .338WM for $375 OTD!!

I plan to put it in a B&C stock, put some nice glass on it and make some noise at the range every now and again....

Anyone every take that 110 Action and put it in a medium range rifle platform? It has a 20" barrel.... Top fed.
 
The 110 action is amongst the most versatile platforms in existence, rivaled only by the 700 action. The 338 WM is not really much of a target gun, the ammo is pricy and the recoil is on the harsh side, but to each his own, 338 Win mag is however quite possibly the best elk/moose cartridge out there.
I have bought several Savages for $300-$450 in more appropriate target calibers, might want to look for a 308, 223, 243, 270, 30-06 heck anything that does not wear a "magnum" name on it if all you want is punching paper at 100-300 yards. Savages are accurate rifles but picky as can be, I would know I have owned half a dozen of them, if you want a bolt gun that shoots any ol walmart special ammo well Tikka is the way to go. I am assuming you don't handload correct me if I am wrong.
 
I do hand load. I already have a 700 in .308 setup for the bench. This was one of those items that was on my list but down a little. But for the price I figured what the hey.

And, I like a little recoil ever now and again. Not a round I would use for white tail but If I draw a moose permit or hunt bear this season I will carry it for sure.

It is my first magnum rifle.

If you can handle the recoil, and load them how your Savage likes them I see no downside, go for it, but be forwarder 338 WM recoil is NOTHING like shooting a 308, 40lbs of free recoil is enough to have you seeing stars if you are not used to it.

I purchased it on the spot. I like the hog rifle, I like the open sites too because where I hunt there is little need for a scope. I hunt an area that was one cut (20 years ago) and is now grown with 6-10 fir trees. I have been hunting this spot for 30 years and have shot more game on the jump that anything else.

But, primary use will be on the bench at the range, like most of my guns. My 336 in 30/30 is my goto gun for deer.
 
The Hog hunter comes with a blind mag. Does B&C offer a stock for that? I like the rifle and have considered one in 308 myself. I think you'll like it even if you stay with the factory stock.
 
Stockys shows one. I do not see the bottom metal though like you can get for the 700....

Nice going that is one hell of a muzzle brake on it. They call that a Hog Hunter?? Looks more like you can take down a 2,000 bull at 500 with it. (LOL)

Yuppie, that's great. Pretty much what I want to do with mind. The challenge is I want to also use it for bear. Those raised rings seem like a good want to go.

Caliber is overkill, but I like the rifle. :D I have given thought to a barrel for my 110 in .338 just to say I have one and to give me a new toy to work up loads for, but it's not THAT important. I never use the 7, bit of a cannon in the woods. It's a 20 year old Savage 110 and I've never had a problem with how it works. Not a very refined rifle, not the smoothest of actions (a bit of an understatement). It still feels like the bolt glides on sand paper, but it works.

That's why I own Japanese and became a pretty decent mechanic. Motorcycles are NOT inexpensive to operate under YOUR conditions, guess you have figured that out. :D I'm not a cruiser guy, though. Were I into cruisers, the Hog is the ultimate goal.
 
I compromised. I own a victory.

I am looking forward to making my 338 a bench gun but also using it for black bear.
