I have a Mosin Nagant Model 38 that I've been working on but may have a barrel that has seen its best days. One thought that has occured is to bore out the barrel to 35 caliber and create a cartridge that is .35"X54mm Russian.

Since 'there is nothing new under the sun' does anyone know if this has been done before and where I can find some information on this kind of conversion?:)

On one of the cruffler type forums I hung out on years ago, that was quite a bit of talk about the various wildcat cartridges that used the good old Mosin round as the basis. Most of these were from Finland (what a surprise, eh? ), and some were actually adopted by Finnish ammo companies and commercialized.

The Gun Digest for either 1999 or 2000 has a good article about this.

Oh yeah, your idea has been done, and if I recall correctly, that version was one of the commercial jobs. In fact, I am fairly certain there is a Russian version of the round used for sporting purposes as well. May have been a 9x54R, but definitely in the same ballpark.

HTH,

I'm not certain, but looking at my MN91/30's, I don't think there's enough steel in the barrel to safely bore it to .35 cal and load it to hunting velocities.

You are right ASKNIGHT but somebody could turn and thread a #3 medium contour barrel and chamber it for 9.3X54R,,,,if only somebody could find a reamer,,,,,,,
