just got a single shot 35 whelen, has anybody got any good load data for it ? i'll be using a 200 grain remington psp (thats the only one i could find localy). thanks for any help.

I have been having fits with my 35 Whelen till this month. I have had bad hangfires with AA2520, lesser hangfires with Varget. No hangfires with IMR 3031, but I am out of that.

I find it hard to believe but this cartridge likes fast powders. IMR 3031 is a good first choice.

This month’s testing I had no hangfires with IMR 4064. My best test data is below. I got a 1 3/8” five shot 100 yard group with the best load. Other groups were basketball sized.

My greatest problem with this cartridge is shooting this lightweight rifle without flinching. It kicks and is uncomfortable to shoot.

Mhat: We may be shooting the same type rifle. I 've had a unused Ruger 1B in 30-06 rebarreled to the 35 Whelan and have been shooting a Sierra 200 gr RN bullet in it using both H335 and Varget with the Varget having a slight edge on accuracy. Both loads are at maximum since my barrel has a long leade. I load from the Speer #14 manual if you would like to check out my loads. Both powders give me under 3/4" groups and I'm more than satisified with its proformance. :)

I've got the H&R handi rifle. Someone here in MS. had them do a custom run of 200. I'm hope I can get it to shoot for primative weapons. randy1911 sent me some load data to try also. Thanks for the info.

I can't speak for the 200 grain loads, but with the 225 grain Partitions and Barnes Triple Shocks, my go to powder is RL15. At Loadbook max loads, I get a slight bit over 2600 feet per second MV, and extreme spreads in the single digits, with good accuracy. This is with a Remington 700 Classic with a 22" barrel.

SlamFire1, put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it. The Whelen is about like a .30-06, maybe a little worse.
