as of right now I dont have a reloader, just more important things like food I need to buy. but what would be a good commercial .357 hunting round? Obviously I want the heaviest bullet I can find, but is it worth it to lose a few grains for hollow points (180 gr hornady xtp or 210 gr LSWC) If you guys have another suggestion please feel free to add it in as well.

Are you shooting A .357 mag or .357max, Is it A revolver or rifle, Any how, If your going to use any .357 I would try to buy some thing wiyh nosler partitions or better yet Barnes XPB,s there copper and will retain weight. As for reloading your own cheep try Lee,s classic ''Midway.USA'' at about $20.00. Its slow but gets the job done. If you load your own check out the .357 rifle bullits ''35 Rem.'' less drag. I live in arizona ,The white tail are small enough you can use a .22 Are you sure you don,t want to use a 44mag the deer I see on T.V in your state are fairly hefty. Hope you hit em up close. Any how hope this helps and good hunting.

In Ohio,we are not allowed to use centerfire rifles for deer. (even the straight walled ones) There are exceptions for "special damage control permits".I've never killed a deer with any handgun, but have talked to some folks that have had good results with various 158 & 180 gr bullets in .357.
Have talked to far more though, that swear by .41 mag & bigger.Myself,I'd feel confident using any 158 or heavier in .357 mag or max.

Sorry, I have a 6" .357 magnum revolver. deer here average about 175pounds field dressed. And It's all close up, in your face style hunting, 30 yds maximum shot, so weight retention at distance isnt much of an issue. I just got into the revolver game, and do well enough target shooting that i thought I'd give it a try. If it dosen't work out, I'll go back to the shotgun.

What I'm not looking to do is just cause enough damage to injure the animal for it to die later.

Wide Flat Nose Hard Cast in 175-200gr range and shoot to break the shoulder.

I made a mistake years ago using a 357 w/t 180gr hp on a large mule deer doe at about 75yrds and bullet came apart and never made it past the rib. Rib broke and damaged the lung. She dropped about 25 min. later about 500yrds away only after I shot my last deer tag with a friends rifle. The rancher had a doe tag so he took her. I swore I would never shoot a deer with a hp again only WFN or SWC.
