357 Mag & Unique vs H110

Anyone have success with Unique, or N340 with 125 grain plated? I really don't want to buy another powder.

Not plated, but conventional cast 125s, ACME and Missouri. I've run unique in my wife's taurus snubby and my Taurus M66 6". Run the gamut from start loads to near max. Got good to decent accuracy approaching max Lyman cast data. Lighter loads were noticeably dirty and accuracy was variable. I prefer HP-38 with the 125s, Unique or HS-6 has been a better fit for 158 cast for me.

I think your charge of H110 is too low, that's why the extreme spread is so high. I also wouldn't use it with a plain based bullet. Really need a gas check and max loads for H110 to be applicable.

Unique is a wonderful powder if it yields the desired velocity. I use more of it than anything else.

What length barrel? If it is a shorter barrel gun then there is no need to use H110 or similar. Unique at max loads will almost duplicate those loads using less powder na less flash and Boom,
No it won't, not even close. Even out of a 3" barrel, H110 is going to yield significantly higher velocities. By that I mean 200-300fps.

Well I have a sheet of data conducted by myself that proves otherwise Max load of Unique and H110 and a 125 gr TMJ where about the same when shot out of a Ruger SP101 2'ish inch barrel But the debate is not worth it. Believe what you want. Simply going by velocity by the inch chart is meaningless.

Partial data from test.

Added Data for Max loads of Unique and H110/ All else remains the same

Unique,9.7 gr

Avg=1276
H=1297
L=1235
ES=62
SD=24

H110 Compressed, 22.0gr

Avg=1268
H=1299
L=1249
ES=50
SD=19

I'm not going by a chart. I'm going by my own chronograph numbers.

S&W model 28 4"
125gr XTP over 22.0gr H110/WSP - 1536fps
125fgr XTP over 9.6gr Unique/WSP - 1270fps

An advantage of 266fps in favor of H110.

S&W model 60 3"
125gr XTP over 22.0gr H110/WSP - 1480fps
125fgr XTP over 9.6gr Unique/WSP - 1300fps

An advantage of 180fps in favor of H110.
