I recently inherited a sw 357 magnum model 19-3 ser#K940446, I am trying to figure out the age of the gun. ThxView attachment 783522 View attachment 783522

According to my Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson your 19-3 was made in 1969. 1969 = K848782-K946391 Serial numbers K prefix.
Beautiful revolver, Model 19 is one of my favorite Smith & Wesson’s.

You've got a great one there as the Model 19 is one truly classic .357 revolver. Could you try to post your photos again as I couldn't get the attachments to open.

Having some issues with my phone now. I will try to upload them again. Thx

Ive had three model 19's, as said before beware of shooting hot 110 and 125 gr loads, though what you find today is really watered down, even the remington gold sabers are lucky to get 1200 fps from a 4 inch barrel, but there are still loads out there like the federal and remington 125 grain Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point that burn fast. I myself like the a 158 gr pill in the .357 though I mainly use mine for hunting not defense. Care to show us a pic?

Finally got the problem with my phone fixed. Here is a photo of my .357 mag.

Hot 158 grain loads will also crack the forcing cone on a Model 19. Just ask my Model 19.

Fortunately, S&W replaced the barrel in 1980 or so but I understand barrels are no longer available new from S&W.

Enjoy the Model 19 but shoot hot loads only once in a while.

those of you that mentioned the fragility of the forcing cones is why I prefer Ruger revolvers--there is no way I am wearing one out

Ive never had a problem with my three that shot 158 and 180 grainers, of course could be totally anecdotal

I still shoot my pair (out of four owned) with magnums. Even hot 158gr buffalo bore although mostly 158GR SWC's over a mid range 2400 load.

I do have a spare barrel (and cylinder) just in case though that took me awhile to source.

Edited to add: this thread needs more pics.
From when I had 4x M19's
