357 Sig Anyone?

Okay, like most of you, I need another carry gun like a hole in the head, but I find myself drawn to the 357 Sig cartridge, so today I went looking for one. Found a few examples, most too large for what I had in mind, but then found a Glock 33. I've already bought and sold 3 Glocks, but for some reason this one felt better than those (strange since 2 of those were 26's). $479+tax, so I won't be buying anytime soon, but I was just wanting some input from those who shoot this cartridge.
 
In a few short months, it's probably become my favorite caliber to shoot. Loud and flashy (though flash can often be tempered if desired with higher-quality ammo) and incredibly accurate with its renowned flat trajectory, it's great fun and a very satisfying caliber to shoot. If one doesn't reload (as I don't), ammo can certainly be more expensive than other calibers, but a little on-line shopping can make the difference relatively minimal.

I shoot mine out of a Sig P229 (which also has a .40S&W factory conversion barrel) that both fits my hands and handles the .357Sig load perfectly.

I bought a Glock 33 for my girlfriend for carry. I found 357SIG from the Glock 33 to be hard on the hands. It's a great defense package, but I wouldn't want to go shoot it on a regular basis. The 357SIG is a fairly powerful round. I would describe the recoil as "shocking"...kinda like when you break a wooden ruler in two...gives that stinging feeling. But, if you want a kick-ass cartridge in a lightweight gun...that's what you're gonna get.
 
I really liked mine a lot out of my P229, but I wasn't convinced that I actually gained any "real world" advantage. It's very possible that I'm wrong, of course, but 9mm does it all for me. When I'm after .357 Mag performance I'll just shoot my .357 Mag. And my 1911 pretty much completes the picture.
 
I agree 100% with at-home-daddy. I picked up a G31 a while back in a trade, really liked the cartrige, didn't like the gun (just not a big fan of the full size Glocks).

So I sold the 31 and bought a 32c. . .which has replaced my G23 as my primary carry piece :cool:

You really know have ahold of something when you pull the trigger. Big boom, but mine doesn't recoil much more than a 9mm.

In my area, the 357Sig is really becoming popular.
 
I really love my 229 sport. I am getting ready to make another run of reloads for it. I just shot up the last of my brass a few months back and the urge to shoot it is growing. I am set up for about 5000 rnds of 124 grn Remington JHP's with AA9 (my favorite combination) but I will probably crank out at least 2000 88 grn Rem JHP's "screamers" as I like to call them just for fun!

The 357sig is a fun cartraige and is easy to reload for once you get the system worked out.
 
I just recently bought a 4" XD-357, and I'm really liking it so far.

at-home-daddy, where are you getting your ammo online? ammoman.com has a case of fmj for $10.50/box, hoping to find it a little cheaper.
 
Anybody have any chrono figures for a 357SIG (especially 125gr.) out of a P229's 3.9" barrel?

I get about 1200fps with 124gr. 9mm NATO out of my BHP. I've always liked the P229, but I've never been able to justify it, plus it has one less round in the mag (preban mags of course).

Any chrono figures for a 4.4" barreled P226 in 357SIG? I understand their are 15 round LEO mags for it in 357SIG/.40?

Yeah, that's if you buy 1000 rounds, but I don't have the desire or available space to store quite that much of one caliber...and if you go 500 rounds, you're back up to $13.90 per box (albeit with free shipping), so thus far I've given AmmoMan the pass. I just usually scout around the major retailers -- avoiding reloader like Georgia Arms, Precision, etc. in favor of new ammo -- and try to find the best deal at that time. It's a little more work than 9mm or .40 or .45 to find a good deal, but it's worth it when you get that stuff on the range...:)
 
With ammoman it seems like you don't know what you're getting sometimes. Like those "seconds" 9mm Gold Dots they're selling...

I've never been that impressed with their prices either.
 
velocity 3.9 and 4.8

357 SIG 3.9 with a 124 or 125 i get 1420 with a 4.8 i get 1509 with the same bullets.
 
357 sig is great

I have an XD 357 bi-tone 4" and it is great.
I installed night sights and Don's guide rod and 22# spring and it is great.
As far as ammo goes, I am lucky enough to live 10 minutes from Cheaper than Dirt in Fort Worth.
I went today and bought it for $8.99 a box for s & b.
I keep it in the box below the bed and keep my Kimber Ultra Carry II SS on me when I am out and about. Hard to beat the .45. If all else fails, I throw a Taurus 851SS in the pocket.....Hot summers here ya know.

Which range do you usually shoot at. Perhaps some time we could met and I could take you up on that offer. They had a Springfield at Outdoor America, but it was the full size, not sure if their making the compact yet but I'd sure give it a try. Shot an XP in 9mm once, trigger was very impresive, as was the gun itself.
 
In town, I shoot at H&H. Their ammo is a bit high, but range time is reasonable and they don't hassle you...unless they see sparks from steel-core ammo.

For no more than they cost, the XD is a very nice gun. My son's Glock cost twice as much and he usually ends up shooting mine. Go figure!

I've had three pistols in 357SIG.
A SIG 229,a 226,and a Glock 32.They were all impressive but like the above poster said,I didn't see where I gained any real world advantage to the round.
If I could shoot 357sig as cheaply as 9mm,then maybe I'd do it again.Frankly,if I could afford the 357,I'd probably just shoot more .45.
 
4.8 is a p229 sport all with 124 or 125

power pistol will do the top end velocity with the 357 SIG 1420for a 3.9 in a p229 AND 1509 in the p229 sport .i have a 5 inch barrel for the p229 as soon as EGW getts it fitted,thanks,keith
 
Could you tell me what the ammo was that you used?

I know the 125gr. Winchester Ranger's are spec'd at 1,350 fps out of a 4" barrel. They seem kind of anemic compared to other 357SIG loads.
 
my ammo with power pistol and fed primers

when i first started i was mad because i thought factory was 1450 .then i went and looked it up again and it is 1350.the factory is hot at 1350 most of the time it's no big deal to beat factory ammo.it's not to hard to get 2 inch groups with it at 25 yards.with the p229 sport 2 inches is a joke it's so easy.it will also go 1509 with a 124 or 125.the load is a heavy load of power pistol but not a crazy load.i have sat down and run 300 of them through my gun without problems,thanks,keith
 
reload the 357 SIG

the bullets are 9mm so they are cheap.the powder charge runs like 9.8 or 10.5 it depends on what powder you use.still cheap even if it does use more powder than the 9mm,thanks,keith
