Outside of 22,25,32,and 380 basically starting with 9mm as a minimal caliber is 357 Sig the fourth most popular auto round after 9,45,and 40?

My understanding is 10mm is a more powerful round than 357Sig is this correct?

The U.S. Secret Service use 357Sig?

While 10mm is also a hunting round,357Sig is not correct?

Only a range gun and self defense?

I understand 10mm is more powerful than 357Sig,although i hear 357Sig is known to penetrate steel where as i never hear 10mm can is this true?

357Sig can interchnge with most if not all 40S&W with a simple barrel and mag swap?

Thanks for all 357 info

Pros and Cons

1) You could say that. Outside of the big three, the next most commonly chambered calibers are the 357SIG, 10mm and 38Super. And thats what i would list them as in order of popularity, even though they are real close.

2)Yes

3)From what ive heard, yes

4)Correct, although some members here might say the 357SIG can be used for hunting. I havent heard of it, yet the 10mm is commonly used for hunting. IMO, its probably the most common autoloader caliber used for hunting with a pistol.

5)its probably not a good choice for competitions due to its increased recoil over the 9mm and 38super. Its a good choice for SD but depending on your area, budget or lack of a reloader, might not be a good choice for alot of range use because of the price.

6)Besides the 5.7x28mm, most autoloading cartridges arent designed to penetrate steel. Most can punch through sheet metal like 16ga, but thats not what they are designed for. All i can say is that the 357SIG can move a 147gr. bullet ~1300fps where the 10mm can move a heavier 155gr. bullet ~1475fps.

7)Depends on the make of the pistol. You might also have to change out the recoil spring. Most 10mm's can be changed out to 40short and weaks as well.

i would like to bump this post for any .357 SIG input.
i was thinking 10mm but really limited choices. figured .357 SIG in SW M&P would be a nice "high Power" auto loader. something that would penetrate say a car door. Also my state has lower limit on handguns for hunting, 500 ft-lbs energy at muzzle. i believe .357 SIG out of a service sized M&P would do this. thanks for any input from you .357 SIG owners.

I hope it is not too off topic but how does a 10mm compare to .357 magnum? I ruined a Champion swinging target this weekend with a .357 magnum. The target was advertised to handle up to .44 magnum but the .357 cratered half way through the target 3 times before I noticed the damage.

Energy wise, its just as equal as the 357mag. Its feels weaker but thats because the action soaks up alot of the recoil. They are both able to get a 155gr. or a 158gr. bullet to cruise around 1400fps out of a 4" barrel. The 357mag could have an edge because longer barrels are available but the 10mm could have an edge because it can use heavier bullets.
