I've only shot 158 gr. "very hot" (felt like small girl holding jackhammer) factory so far. I plan to experiment with several other commercial offerings, but was wondering what handloads I might try that would be more manageable out of a 2 1/8" barrel. Not expecting anything as smooth as the .38 specials I've tried, and still want some magnum punch, just would like to feel like I was the one in control of the gun and not the other way around.

Go with lighter bullets Ed, 110 or 125gr. You'll get plenty of blast so you feel like you're touching off a magnum but the felt recoil shouldn't be as bad as with the 158's.

Winchesters 110gr factory 357 load is especially easy to shoot, about the easist factory magnum load I've ever shot.
