i recently sold my 1911 (been searching for a 625 to replace it), and am in need of a "replacement" pin gun for the time being. luckily, i have a few .38/.357 wheelguns at the ready.

a buddy of mine said he used to get .358 sized "logs", and although he couldnt remember the exact weight, he said they were somewhere up around 240ish grains. they used to load them in .38sp brass, with a nice, slow *usually shotgun* powder, and compress the charge.

i've searched high and low for a bullet mold to make my own logs...but so far, no go. anyone ever seen these before?

For some reason the Thunderhead bullets made by Penn are not being made right now. They have a note above them, "Temporarily Suspended."

I would think anything in the 158-160 grain category would work; but it needs a sharp shoulder.

I've seen moulds for 170 and 180 grain lead .358 bullets. Sierra (I think) makes a 170 grain FMJ flat front for silhouette shooting. Nothing slower than H110 or 2400 I would think.

those "Thunderheads" would most definitely do the trick. too bad they're suspended.

ideally, i'd like to cast my own, but if the biggest i could go would be 180gr, i might as well shoot a .40S&W (i've been looking for a 5" 610 for a while too. hmm, maybe this could be a nice excuse lol)

These will do the trick. 215gr SWC-GC

Lyman 358429 should do the trick. Mine weigh about 171 grains sized and lubed. They do smack with authority when sit atop a charge of 2400 in .357 mag brass.
