I am thinking about selling my Kimber CDP Pro pre-II for a Sig-Sauer 229 or 239 in .40S&W (and actually, I would buy two, one for carry, one for practice/IDPA).

One of the appeals of the SIG is that I can apparently drop in SIG .357 or 9mm barrel and use appropriate magazines. My question really is, can I use SIG barrels or do I need to get BarSto's?

An alternative is getting 2 Glock 23s.

Thanks.

For the sig you can go from 40 to 357, or from 357 to 40 but not to nine with factory barrels

to go to nine you have to get a barsto

For the P229, P226, & SP2022 the 357Sig & .40 magazines are interchangeable; you just need the appropriate barrel. The P239 uses different magazines for .40 & 357Sig, though I've heard people have used the 40 mags with 357Sig with no adverse effects (no personal experience, YMMV). .40 rounds will not fit in P239 357Sig mags.

As for the barrels, both Sig and Bar-sto make 40 & 357Sig barrels for the P229. If you want to convert a 40/357Sig P229 to 9mm you have to go through Bar-sto.

if you have the 40 or the 357

you can shoot all three calibers. If you but the 9mm, than you can only shoot 9mm. Yes you can use SIG barrels, you don't need Bar-Sto barrels. The only thing that I'm not sure of is that I think that if you have the 40 or 357, and want to shoot 9mm, you may need to get a 9mm slide and recoil spring & guide, but you would have to check with sig, as I'm not 100% on that.

My understanding is the 9mm conversion barrels from Bar-sto only require you to change out the barrel and use 9mm magazines. Spring weight doesn't change between Sig pistols based on caliber. Having said that someone who goes the Bar-sto route may want to try different spring weights to get the best functioning.

A note: Bar-sto marks all their barrels as 'semi-drop-in'; they may require minor fitting for correct functioning. IMHO if you want to switch between 40 & 357Sig get the Sig barrel; it's a direct drop in as well as being OEM so no warranty issues. I expect using a Bar-sto barrel may void your warranty.

Thanks for all the great info! I am interested in the Sig Barrels because I don't want to pay or smith a Bar-Stol barrel. But, getting .40 and and Sig .357 and only a 9mm Bar-stol isn't bad.

So many guns, so little t.. err money.
