Necking up an 8x57mm Mauser cartridge to .35 caliber. Has this ever been done? Would it rival the .358 Win.,.35 Whelen,.35 Rem. or other? Is there anything to be gained over 8mm?

It's called the 9x57, and it's been around quite a while. It's about the same as the 358 Win.

guys, ahm NO...the 9x57 is NOT the same as the 9.3x57.... .356 vs .366 diameter bullets.

AaronE, did you notice the distinction that was made? Same cartridge case, two different diameter bullets.

Then there’s the 9.5x57 that’s uses a 0.375" bullet.
A German friend of mine uses one to hunt wild boar near Hamburg. His is built on an old Husqvarna action. Bought it in Sweden. Mannlicher stock, with a stubby little 20” barrel.
It’s an old cartridge, dating back to the 1900’s, and is used in Scandinavia for elk & moose. European commercial ammunition is loaded to a fairly low pressure spec. Making it ballistcally identical to our .375 Winchester.

The .35x57mm would make a neat wildcat cartridge. I like the x57 part of it, but the .35 part might be a bit iffy. What exactly are you looking for? Is there some particular reason for the thirty-five caliber? Why not the 9.3 mm caliber or the .338x57? I’m guessing you’re looking for a little heavier bullet for woods on deer, ergo; the .35 cal part.
The case capacity of the x57 case would fall in between the 35 Whelen 06 case and the 358 Win 08 case and way larger than the .35 Rem case. So, using the same bullet weight, the velocity would be in between the Whelen and the 358 Win cartridges. So, the only advantage over the 8mm would be the selection of heavier bullets available to the handloader in thirty-five caliber. As mentioned above, the 9.3x57 uses a .366 cal., 286-grain bullet at about 2100 fps and I’ve seen them selling on the internet for about $400. That might be the way to go and save the expense of a wildcat chambering and barrel. Or, maybe it’s a pet project and cost is no object to consider. The 9.3’s have become one of my favorites over the years.
What type of rifle action are you thinking of using for this 35x57, a modern bolt or a single shot?

Just curious if it had been done and what level of success it may have had. Would it offer any advantage over the 7.92x57? Not really interested in building one (and don't handload). I build Mauser 98 sporters(for my own use) and have always been a fan of the 35s.
