I bought the Winchester Big Bore XTR back in the late '70's or early '80s when they first came out; and I thought then it was a good solid rifle.
It shot good groups at a 100 for a lever action and open sights, but I found that the group would wander as the weather changed, so it always needed to be checked prior to going hunting.
It was very effective on deer, back then I would set up on a creek bottom under a tree and catch the deer moving through - so shots were close range (25 yards) and in really thick brush. It did a good job of putting deer down where they were hit without bruising large portions of meat.
I got rid of it after hog hunting with it one weekend where I shot several pigs at close range, but it did not stop them in their tracks - the land we hunted was too thick for anything other than a pig or deer to move through, so once they got into that stuff they were gone. I have no doubt it killed them, but even if they were able to go on for 100 yards after being hit, they were as good as in the next county due to that piney woods thicket.
After that hunt I traded it for a 7mm Rem Mag which did put the pigs down where they were hit.
I liked the rifle and wish I kept it, but at that time it did not do what I had bought it for - pig hunting. Great on deer though.
