I've been reloading for a while in a number of calibers - including 38/357.

For 38/357 I reload for a revolver and have been using a roll crimp with SJSP bullets.

I would like to switch to coated (which I have done for 9 & 45) but am unsure regarding crimp for a revolver load.

So, couple of question s as follows for those who do reload for 38/357, revolver, with coated bullets:

1.Do you roll crimp your rounds?

2.If you do not roll crimp (eg taper) do you have any problems with bullet movement in a revolver?

3.How hot (FPS) are you pushing your rounds (FYI these are for a 6" revolver)?

4.If you are roll crimping you are then using a bullet with a cannelure - which brand have you been using and which weight?

Thanks!

I have been using the Xtreme 158 gr RFP with a cannelure. I use a VERY slight roll crimp, real close to more of a taper crimp. I do not load hot as these are just range loads No bullet movement in my 6 1/2 inch Blackhawk.

OPPS: I was thinking plated not coated, disregard my rush to assume you meant something other tan what you were saying.

I load lots of 357. You only roll crimp when you start pushing into the upper velocities. I do roll crimp pretty firm with my hot loads. It's not all about holding the bullet in place during recoil and more about good ignition and burn before bullet begins to move. I have used h110 at or above book max and those are my full roll crimped rounds.

I recently loaded some Hi-Tech coated 158 Gr SWCs in .357 using 2400 and I gave them a medium roll crimp into the crimp groove. Shot really well at around 1250 FPSl. I was very happy with them.

Appreciate the info...I'll give the Hy-Techs a try.
