I'm trying to work up a load for .38 Spl & .357 Mag using VihtaVuori N340. Bullets being used are: .38 - Hornady 148 gr HBWC. .357 - Remington 158 gr JSP. I'm using Winchester SP primers for both. All my manuals, including VihtaVuori's, don't give a load for N340 with these bullets. I'm looking for good accurate loads, not necessarily velocity busters. I'll be shooting these out of a 4" S&W 15 and a 4" S&W 586. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I must be fairly quick ..... well leaving aside whether or not you find loads for the exact bullets ... going by weight (mass!) is usually good enough .. as long as differentiation between lead and jacket of course.

But ... IMO . forget N-340 for any loads even approaching .357 mag. really. It is about as fast a powder as Bullseye and whilst shorter tubes are better off with faster powders ... the pressures you can achieve can max out .. big time!!

I love Vhit powders and will use 340 for 38 spl happily but .. once you explore the ''mag zone'' ... switch to slower .. I'd recommend N-110 ... which is not so very different from hodgon H-110 . a very popular mag powder. If you have Blue Dot ... that'll do for moderate mag loads also.

Hope this helps for now .....

Try 5.1 Grains of N340 under the 148 bullet, should make a good load. This load works well in my Ruger GP-100 and BlackHawk.
