1.8 is a popcorn fart.
2.0 - 2.2 is my go to load

Loaded a few at 1.7. Using powder coated bullets. I could SEE the bullet going to the target.

Haven't loaded anything under 2.0gr since.

Do not load a compressed charge. TB does not likely to be compressed. Powder charge ALMOST to base of bullet works best.

Howdy

Despite the name, Trailboss is not a Black Powder substitute.

I realize, the OP was probably asking about 38 Special, but it should be emphasized that Trailboss should NEVER be used in Black Powder firearms such as a Cap & Ball revolver.

The reason for the name is that Trailboss was developed for the CAS crowd, who often (not always) load their cartridges with a bare minimum of powder. Many of the large capacity cartridges used in CAS do not do well with such light loads.

Trailboss has large, fluffy grains that take up a lot of volume in cartridges with a lot of internal case capacity, and light loads with Trailboss fill up the case much better than most conventional powders.

The standard formula with Trail Boss: fill the case to the base of the bullet, being careful not to compress the powder at all. That is your maximum charge. The minimum charge is 70% of that.

The formula was introduced when the powder was released and reloading data was not nearly as complete as it now is. Hodgdon no longer widely publicizes the formula, as their "Reloading Data Center" is thorough and free.

why not on this forum I see all the time people using bp and smokelss

Because there is a dedicated forum on THR for "Hand Loading and Reloading" and another for "Revolvers" where the discussions largely center around shooting smokeless powder. This particular forum as I have always understood it, is a place for black powder shooters: muzzle loaders and black powder cartridge shooters. It is not an appropriate place to ask questions about smokeless powder reloads.

Sorry if you can't figure that out. It always seemed obvious to me.
