Hey folks,

I started a thread on the "Buy, Sell and Trade: Reloading Components and Gear" THR forum with the intention of selling my own hard cast 38 caliber bullets. These bullets are from a Lyman #358156 mould, a Ray Thompson design, with a nominal weight of 155 grains before gas check and lube are applied when sized to .358 in a Lyman Lubrisizer.

I am willing to have folks test them by buying 100 of the bullets for $10 plus shipping. If anyone buys these bullets and thinks they are not worth the money, I will return the $10, and all it will have cost you would be the shipping. I am pretty sure folks will be satisfied with the product and will then place larger orders.

My E-Mail address is [email protected] and my home phone is 717-766-1026, but I would suggest looking clicking on the following THR thread for more information: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=370414.

Best wishes,

Hey folks,

One of the members here sent me a PM suggesting that I might be required to have a Federal Firearms Licence to sell my bullets to others. I did have a FFL from 1968 to 2007, but I never was aware of any requirement to have any licence to sell bullets whether they were cast or jacketed. Am I missing something here? Is there any requirement to have any such licence to sell cases or bullets? Any knowledge from the folks would be appreciated.

Best wishes,

I do not believe an ffl is required for the manufacture of an inert item such as this. And the requirement for an ffl to sell ammo or components died with the changes brought about in The Gun Control Act of 1986. A class 06 FFL is required to manufacture and sell your own Ammo. This is not that!!!!!!!!

WRONG ANSWER! A class 6 FFL; IS Required to sell any COMPONENT for ammunition, period. You could get your t*t in a wringer if you don't have one.

Hey Snuffy,

Something seems wrong with what you are saying, "WRONG ANSWER! A class 6 FFL; IS Required to sell any COMPONENT for ammunition, period. You could get your t*t in a wringer if you don't have one." Folks are always selling cases, bullets, shot, and even primers here and on other forums. I don't recall seeing anyone saying they have a Class 6 FFL. Even when I had a dealer's FFL, the BATF never questioned anything about my sales of ammo or components after they stopped the requirement for record keeping sometime in the 1970s. Can you be more specific? I don't want to sell bullets illegally, but I would like to know what part of the US Code of Federal Regulations require a Class 6 FFL. In fact, I really don't even know what a Class 6 FFL is. Thanks for your help.

I have the highest regard for people who abide by the laws of the land. I have a C&R 03 FFL myself. Those that produce ammunition and sell them commercially do have and should have a license to do so. IMO those engaging in a hobby such as bullet casting can use the law to dispose of their excess stock of lead. If say, David Wile sells a printed sheet of his personal loads for 38 caliber for $10.00, and with every sale one would receive the equivalent weight of 100 rds of 38 cal lead for free plus shipping, would the bullet police object? You're only disposing of lead regardless of the form. Lead is for sale on ebay, so selling it is not restricted as far as I know. I'm sure someone will take exception to this thought.

I have posed this question in person, face to face with the ATF people in the Boise Idaho office and received an answer to the negative every time I asked over the past 10 years. They tell me that components are not covered by the same regs that cover manufacture and sale of ammunition. International sales may be covered but that is a State Dept. area of responsibility, as I was told.

Hey MMCSRET,

Thanks for the information. I think I will call my local BATF folks and ask the same questions. I don't see how selling bullets and cases and even cartridges can be illegal. It is done all the time by open and honest folks.

Hey MMCSRET,

In the case of loaded cartridges, I wasn't even thinking of reloads. Over the years, I have purchased a fair bunch of ammunition, both new and surplus (not reloaded), from distributors. I have frequently sold some of the ammunition I no longer wanted, and I have never been called to attention by the BATF for doing so.

In this particular case, I started using aluminum gas checks I made with a tool set I bought, found out they worked the same for me as the old copper gas checks, and I thought I would offer to sell some bullets with these gas checks to allow folks to try them out and see how well they worked. Now the subject of selling something illegally comes up, and it is a bit disconcerting.

Like I said in an earlier post, here on THR the members regularly sell bullets, brass, etc., and I do not think THR would allow us to do so if it was illegal. I will let you all know what I find out when I contact the BATF.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile
